Located in downtown Chicago, GEMS World Academy-Chicago is the first JK-12 school in the United States from GEMS Education. The lower school opened September 2014 in the Lakeshore East neighborhood of Chicago and is the first private school in the United States connected to the GEMS global network of international schools.[1]
GEMS Education has a global network of international schools in Europe, Africa, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. The GEMS Education network educate over 142,000 students from 151 countries and employ 11,000 education professionals, specialists, and staff from over 80 countries.[2]
School Facilities
GEMS World Academy-Chicago first phase lower school is located in Chicago and offers facilities that combine generous classroom space, technology, a planetarium, media center, fitness center, a 25-meter swimming pool and a 500-seat auditorium. The building was designed by bKL Architecture and is located in Chicago's Lakeshore East.
GEMS World Academy-Chicago will soon establish upper school facilities: a 16-story structure for grades 6-12 sited one short block north of the lower school.
Faculty
Geoffrey Jones is the Head of GEMS World Academy-Chicago. Mr. Jones is a former principal of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools Upper School and held leadership roles at other premier schools in the United States.
Curriculum
GEMS World Academy-Chicago provides students with international education program through the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). The IBO is a program that is recognized by leading universities around the world. GEMS IB Diploma students have been recruited and accepted into more than 350 universities worldwide. Junior-kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school classes are offered.
The foundation for the curriculum is a blend of an international program of studies and GEMS Education's core values—Global Citizenship, The Pursuit of Excellence, Leadership through Innovation and Growing by Learning. Their international curriculum is a benchmarked college preparatory course of study proven around the world.[3]
