Genadendal Residence is the official residence of the President of South Africa when in office at Tuynhuys, Cape Town.[1] Genadendal is situated in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. It has been the official residence since 1994 when Nelson Mandela took up residence here rather than neighbouring Groote Schuur.[2] The building, formerly known as Westbrook, is named after the town of Genadendal[3] – itself an Afrikaans word meaning "Valley of Mercy".[4]
The residence first came into existence in the early 18th Century as grain barn and converted into a residence in the mid 1800.[5] The mixed Victorian-Georgian residence it was known as Westbrook until it was changed to the current name in 1995.[6]
