George Holt, Sr.

George Holt (died 16 February 1861) was a British merchant. Originally from Rochdale he came to Liverpool in 1807[1] and became a successful cotton broker, founding the family fortunes. Holt financed the construction of the original India Buildings in Liverpool in 1834 (later replaced by a second building financed by his son, Alfred). He had also founded Blackburne House in the city, as a school for girls, ten years later.[1][2]

Three of his sons became noted shipowners and merchants Alfred Holt, Philip Holt and George Holt, Jr. His youngest son, Robert Durning Holt, became Mayor of Liverpool.
