Ghulam Murshid (Bengali: গোলাম মুরশিদ) is a Bangladeshi author, scholar and journalist, based in London, England.
Career
Murshid was previously a professor of Bengali literature at the University of Rajshahi and a radio journalist with the British Broadcasting Corporation in London. He also held teaching and research positions with Bangladesh Agricultural University and University of Melbourne. He is currently a research associate with the department of the language and culture of South Asia at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London,[1] and an occasional commentator for Voice of America.
Murshid is a scholar on the literature, history, culture and society of Bengal. He has authored over twenty books on a variety of subjects, including Women Studies, Bengali Language and Literature, and Socio-cultural History of Bengal. He writes in both Bengali and English. He has a unique lucid and accessible style of writing that distinguishes him from many other leading authors in South Asia. He is the author of a number of well-known, pathbreaking studies, including Lured by Hope (Oxford University Press), The Heart of the Rebel Poet (Oxford University Press), and The Reluctant Debutante,[2][3] Kalantare Bangla gadya : aupanibeika amale gadyera rupantara, Kalapanir Hatchani: Bilete Bangalir Itihas, and Muktijuddha O Tarpor: Ekti Nirdolio Itihash.
His book on the independence of Bangladesh, Muktijuddha O Tarpor, has been widely recognized as the most objective and authoritative account of the independence of the country. According to some reviewers, Muktijuddho O Tarpor ought to be on the table of everyone whose interest in Bangladesh's history has not dwindled into inanities. The book does credit to the country. It takes every Bengali back to the age of idealism and struggle that once upheld a cause.
Recently, he edited a path-breaking, three-volume Bengali Dictionary on Historical Principles, titled Bibartanmulak Bangla Abhidhan, published by the Bangla Academy. This dictionary traces the historical development of the language, thereby providing a comprehensive resource to scholars and academic researchers.
Recognition
In recognition of his creative achievements, he received a number of top literary awards from both India and Bangladesh. These awards include the Bangla Academy Literary Award, given by the Bangla Academy of Bangladesh to recognize the overall contribution to the Bengali language and literature.
