Guan Guimin is an award-winning operatic tenor who rose to fame in China in the 1980s before eventually moving to the United States. His style integrates Italian Bel canto with Chinese vocal methods,[1] and has been described as having a pure, bright tone.[2]
Guan was born in 1946 in Changzhi, Shanxi province to a family of vegetable farmers.[3] In 1983, he completed graduate studies in Chinese music and opera, and then began performing with the China Conservatory’s experimental orchestra. He was named a national first class performer by China’s Ministry of Culture, was received by future Chinese leader Hu Jintao,[4] and went on to record songs for dozens of films and television shows in China.[2][5][6] In 1996, after suffering from Hepatitis B for several years, Guan began practicing the meditation form Falun Dafa, which he credited with improving his health. He moved to the United States the same year.[7] Guan has performed internationally as a solo tenor with Shen Yun Performing Arts since 2006.[5][8]
