Guillaume is the French equivalent of William (name), which is of old Germanic origin.[1]
As a surname, it was first recorded in Normandy, where the ancient family seat was located. It is conjectured that they were descended from the Count of Évreux in the castle of Evreux.[2] The first known members of the family of the Counts of Evreux were descended from Robert II (Archbishop of Rouen), an illegitimate son of Richard I Duke of Normandy; his grandson was Guillaume, Count of Évreux (1067–1118).
