Halla Pai Huhm
Halla Pai Huhm (alternately, Halla Huhm or Pai Halla;[1] 1922–1994) was a Korean-American dancer and the most well-known teacher of Korean dance in Hawaii.[2]
Biography
Born in Busan,Pai Huhm moved to Japan with four siblings when she was five and was raised by her father's niece.[3] Her training included traditional Korean dance, ballet, and modern dance. She immigrated in 1949 to Hawaii and established a dance studio in the early years of the following decade. In 1959, she began teaching at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the Korean dance style.The Halla Pai Huhm Korean Dance Studio is "the only continuous source of Korean dance and music in the United States".[2] She was the first recipient of the Outstanding Korean in Hawaii award.[4] She was the author of Kut, Korean shamanist rituals (1980).
