History

The land was given to the Archbishop of Cologne, to build a Premonstratensian monastery in 1136 by count Gerhard von Hochstaden. The Abbey and the neighboring farming communities were part of the Duchy of Cleves and became in 1666AD part of Brandenburg, Prussia. Until the early 19th century Hamborn was still a small village.
