Harjeet Singh (born 10 January 2000), also known (in India) as Prince, is an Indian

Early life

Singh was born in Delhi, India. He became a local musician at the age of 15, as a session and recording artist, and became a Bhangra producer.

He has written lyrics for Bollywood films.[1]

Promotion

Singh's song Lak 28 Kudi Da was released as a promotional track for Diljit Dosanjh's film Lion of Punjab.[2] It reached No 1 in BBC Asian Download Charts in May 2011.

His songs were included in the films Cocktail and Mastan.[3] His songs were also heavily viewed on YouTube, appearing on the list of top 10 trending videos of 2012.[4] His song Brown Rang reached top spot and High Heels, in collaboration with Jaz Dhami, took fourth spot.[5]

Career

Singh's Punjabi album International Villager was released on 11 November 2011 (11-11-11).[6] The track Gabru from International Villager featuring singer J-Star topped Asian music charts (including the official BBC Asian charts).[7]

He has performed at many college festivals including at Ansal Institute of Technology and Ramjas College, Delhi.[8]

His song for the film titled Mastaan starring Naseeruddin Shah earned him the biggest amount paid to a song artist in Bollywood to date.[9][10]

A song named Angreji Beat by prince from Honey Singh's recently released album International Villager featuring Gippy Grewal, was featured in Saif Ali Khan's film Cocktail.[11]

On 12 December 2012, Honey Singh released his first solo single Satan by Prince and it premiered on MTV India. The video has been directed by David Zennie and the project was presented by Anurag Kashyap.[12][13][14]

Controversy

In the aftermath of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, the lyrics to some of his songs, which depict violence against women and rape positively have caused controversy.[15][16] An FIR was lodged against Singh for his offensive lyrics while a group of social activists filed an online petition demanding cancellation of his New Year performance at a Gurgaon hotel.[17] After online campaign, Honey Singh's New Year concert was cancelled by hotel.[18] Honey Singh denies writing these offensive lyrics.[19]

On 4 July 2013, a lawsuit claiming that he was the author of the song "Balatkaari", which contained the offensive lyrics, was dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana High court, since the prosecutor was unable to prove that he was the one who uploaded it to YouTube.
