Henry Arnold Cumberbatch CMG (27 June 1858 – 3 December 1918) was a British diplomat who served as Consul General in Turkey and Lebanon.[1]
Career
He was British Consul General of Smyrna from 1896 to 1908[2] and then Consul General in Beirut from 1908 to 1914.[3][4] Cumberbatch was mentioned by Gertrude Bell in her works after a meeting in 1907.[2]
Family
Cumberbatch was born in Berdyans'k, Zaporiz'ka oblast, Ukrainian People's Republic (Taurida Governorate, Russian Empire), the son of Louisa Grace and Robert William Cumberbatch, was also Consul General to the Ottoman Empire. He married Helene Gertrude Rees in Smyrna, now Izmir, January 16, 1891.[1][2] His children were:

- Hugh Douglas (b. 29-07-1897 d. 26-10-1951)

Present descendants include his great-grandson, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, son of actor Timothy Carlton and grandson of Henry Carlton as well as descendants of Robert Cecil who married Nora Skender of Athens and Ida Sybil who married Henry Alwyn Barker of Alexandria.
