History
The first houses in Highland Village were built in the 1950s. In the early 2000s those houses were torn down and replaced with larger houses. Highland Village Shopping Centre was founded in 1957. Highland Village is one of the oldest shopping centres in Houston. Since 1957, The Highland Village Shopping Centre has been maintained and run by Highland Village Holding. Inc. When The Highland Village Shopping Centre first began, it housed Wyatt's Cafeteria, Henke & Pilot supermarket, Highland Village Pharmacy and a Gulf service station. Today, The Highland Village Shopping Centre sits on fifteen acres of land and lined with palm trees to give it the most luxurious look possible. Annually, The Highland Village Shopping Centre decorates for the holiday season. During the holiday season The Highland Village Shopping Centre is decorated with beautiful twinkling lights, large sparkly bows, and other various decorations. The annual lighting of Highland Village is a favorite event among Houstonians and attracts shoppers from all over Houston. The Highland Village Shopping Centre has a weekly farmers market. Every Saturday from 9am to 1pm the farmers market at Highland Village features fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. The farmers market also sells pre-made and organic goods that are very sought-after amongst Houstonians. The Highland Village Shopping Centre is currently owned by Haidar Barbouti. Haidar Barbouti has owned Highland Village since 1990.
