Howrah Municipal Corporation or HMC (formerly established as Howrah Municipality) is responsible for the civic infrastructure and governing body of the city of Howrah. This civic administrative body administers an area of 140 km2. HMC is headed by Rathin Chakrabarti is the present Mayor of Howrah. It was originally established in 1862 as Howrah Municipality to administer the 'twin city' of Calcutta.

Howrah Municipality was established in 1862.[3] From 1896, it started supplying filter water across the city.[4] During 1882-83, Bally Municipality was formed separating it out from Howrah.[5] As per the Howrah Municipal Corporation Act of 1980, Howrah became a municipal corporation,[6] in 1984.In July 2015 Howrah Municipal Corporation and Bally Municipality were merged[1][2]

Administration

The corporation area is divided into fifty wards, each of which elects a councillor.[7] The Mayor-in-council, which is led by Mayor and supported by Commissioner and officers, is responsible for administration of the corporation area.[7] Currently,the trinamool congress is controlling the municipal board.

Services

The HMC is responsible for administering and providing basic infrastructure to the city.
