New York State Board of Elections

After the start of the 21st century, I.S. 72 was designated as a New York Board of Elections polling site for all local, state, and national elections.[1] The move was from the previous location of P.S. 69 which is across the street (Merrymount Street). It has also just recently been renamed Police Officer Rocco Laurie School on March 20, 2009. After three years of discussion, the current principal, Peter Maccelarri, held an assembly welcoming the board of education chancellors, the police officer commissioners, sister and brother-in-law of Rocco Laurie, students, and other invited audience.

History

The school opened in 1975 and has served approximately 2000 students annually. It is named after NYPD Police Officer Rocco Laurie who was killed in the line-of-duty in Manhattan, along with his partner Greg Foster.[2] Both Laurie and Foster served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

Stanley Katzman was the school's first principal. There are 4 assistant principals or AP's (one from each floor), and the Principal's Office is on the first floor. After more than 20 years, the school was structured in a way where each floor is divided by the foreign language the student takes (typically students are grouped in classes by the foreign language elective they choose). The first floor for Italian, and the second, third, and fourth floor for Spanish. Each floor has its own set of AP's, deans and guidance counselors.[3]
