Ian F. Akyildiz (Originally İlhan Fuat Akyıldız) is the Ken Byers Chair Professor with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), the Director of the Broadband Wireless Networking (BWN) Laboratory and Chair of the Telecommunications Group at the School of ECE at Georgia Tech.

Since 2013, Dr. Akyildiz is a FiDiPro Professor (Finland Distinguished Professor Program (FiDiPro) supported by the Academy of Finland) at Tampere University of Technology, Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, Finland, and the founder of the NCC (Nano Communications Center). Since 2008, Dr. Akyildiz is an Honorary Professor with the School of Electrical Engineering - Telecom BCN at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona, Spain, and the founder of the N3Cat (NaNoNetworking Center in Catalunya).

Since 2011, he is a Consulting Chair Professor with the King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Between 2009 and 2012, he was an honorary professor with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and the founder of the Advanced Sensor Networks Lab.

His current research interests are in Nanonetworks, Long-Term Evolution Advanced Networks, Cognitive Radio Networks, and Wireless Sensor Networks.

Biography

He was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on April 11, 1954. He went to high school in Austria. He received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, in 1978, 1981 and 1984, respectively.

He held visiting professorships at the Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria in Chile (1986); Universite Pierre et Marie Curie and École nationale supérieure des télécommunications in Paris, France (1990); Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain (1992); and University of the Balearic Islands in Palma de Mallorca, Spain (1998).

Editing career

He is the Editor-in-Chief of Computer Networks Journal since January 2000. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Ad Hoc Networks Journal in 2003, Physical Communication Journal in June 2008 and Nanocommunication Networks Journal since March 2010.

He is a former editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (1996–2001), Kluwer Journal of Cluster Computing (1997–2001), ACM-Springer Journal for Multimedia Systems (1995–2002), for IEEE Transactions on Computers (1992–1996) as well as for ACM-Springer Journal of Wireless Networks (WINET) (1995–2005).

He served as a guest-editor for several special issues of various journals between 1988–2001 including "Networks in Metropolitan Areas" in October 1992 and "Mobility and Resource Management in Next Generation Wireless Systems" in October 2001 for IEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Communications.

Conferences

He was the technical program chair of the 9th IEEE Computer Communications workshop in 1994.

Together with Imrich Chlamtac, in 1995, he launched the ACM MOBICOM (International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking), which is now the premier conference in the broad field of wireless networking, and he was the Technical Program Chair for MOBICOM'96 and MOBICOM'02.

He was also Technical Program Chair for IEEE INFOCOM'98 (Computer Networking Conference) and IEEE ICC'2003 (International Conference on Communications).

He is the Co-Founder of the ACM SenSys (Sensor Systems) Conference and General Co-Chair of the ACM SenSys'03, which took place in Los Angeles in November 2003.

He was the General Chair for Third Med Hoc (Mediterranean Conference on Ad Hoc Networks), in Bodrum, Turkey, June 2004, and the General Chair of the IFIP Networking'07 Conference in Atlanta, May 2007.

In order to help and boost the research activities in the Black Sea region countries, in 2013 he established the IEEE BlackSeaCom Conference (International Black Sea Conference on Communications and Networking), whose first edition took place in Batumi, Georgia.

He is also the Founder of the ACM NANOCOM (International Conference on Nanoscale Computing and Communication), which he launched in May 2013 with the goal of accelerating the nanoscale computing, communication and networking research activities.

He gives keynote speeches at several international conferences, delivers distinguished seminars and teaches tutorials/classes worldwide.

He currently serves on the advisory boards of several research centers, journals, conferences and companies.

Personal life

His father was an owner of a Timber Factory and a Construction Company in Istanbul, Turkey. His mother was a volunteer for many social activities. They both died at a relatively young ages (62 and 59) in 1976 and 1983, respectively. He is together with Maria Akyildiz (born Schoenauer in Erlangen, Germany) since October 1976. They have three children together. He enjoys different cultures, traveling, languages, soccer, and many other things.
