In Defence was a British crime drama series broadcast on ITV from 26 June until 17 July 2000. Encompassing a total of four episodes, the series was created as a star vehicle for actor Ross Kemp, who stars as the protagonist Sam Lucas, a barrister and legal detective who takes it upon himself to investigate cases whereby the police have failed to uncover enough evidence to secure a conviction.

The programme was axed after just one series after poor ratings, which led to discussions regarding Kemp's contract with ITV. However, following the success of his concurrent programme, Without Motive, his contract was renewed.[1]

Background

In Defence was produced by Helen Gregory and Louise Mutter through Granada Television. Ross Kemp stars as lawyer and legal detective Sam Lucas. Lucas is a man that truly fights for truth and justice. Each episode outlines details of a specific crime committed, as Lucas attempts to gather further evidence and nail the perpetrator. This series lasted for just four episodes before being cancelled; a second series was in the pipeline, but production was ceased after poor viewing figures of the first series.[2]
