International reactions to the LaMia Airlines Flight 2933 accident

The crash of LaMia Flight 2933 on 28 November 2016, that killed almost the entire playing squad of Brazilian football club Associação Chapecoense de Futebol, brought about various international responses.

Reactions by nation

Argentina

The Argentine Football Association sent a support letter to Chapecoense offering free loans from Argentine clubs.[1] Racing Club de Avellaneda and Club Atlético Huracán will play with the Chapecoense badge on their jerseys on their next games.[2]

Brazil

President Michel Temer declared three days of national mourning and requested that personnel from the Brazil's Colombian embassy in Bogotá be moved to Medellín to better assist the survivors and the families of the victims.[3] Brazilian Football Federation insisted Chapecoense to play the next Brasileirão game against Atlético-MG, the final round of this tournament, as a tribute to the players.[4]

Bolivia

In line with standard practices following aircraft crashes, Bolivia sent officials to Colombia to assist in the investigation into the crash. They will work together with Colombian and British counterparts.[5][6]

Colombia

Avianca, Colombia's flag carrier and largest airline, provided 44 psychologists to help in the counseling of the families of the victims. The airline, by request of the Colombian and Brazilian governments, has also provided logistical support and transportation to Medellín of medical personnel from Brazil to help with the identification of the bodies.[7] On Twitter, Avianca expressed regret over the incident and stated that "our prayers are with the families of the victims."[8] A four-hour tribute took place at Atletico Nacional stadium at the time the match Chapecoense had been scheduled to play was set to have kicked off. The posthumous homage was attended by 40,000 expectators with Fox Sports live coverage and followed via streaming from YouTube.[9][10] The Atletico Nacional board asked CONMEBOL (the governing body of football in South America) to declare Chapecoense as champions of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana competition.[11] However, Conmebol has delayed any decision on this matter, due to television rights and contracts signed with several sponsors.[12]

Paraguay

The Paraguayan consul in Medellín confirmed the identity of a fellow countryman among the victims, Gustavo Encina, part of the plane crew.[13] Club Libertad offered their entire squad to help Chapecoense to rebuild the team.[14]

Uruguay

Club Nacional de Football announced that its players would play their coming league fixtures with the crest of Chapecoense on their shirts.[15]
