Itchy-O, formed in 2009, is an avant-garde music performance group based in Denver, CO.
History
Itchy-O's first EP, Inferno!, was released 2011 and their first full-length LP, Burn the Navigator, was released in September, 2014. Both works were engineered by Bob Ferbrache (Slim Cessna's Auto Club, 16 Horse Power, and Devotchka). In 2014, the band signed with the iconic label, Alternative Tentacles.
In 2013, LockerPartners produced a short documentary on the band titled, Dark Junk and Light. The documentary was selected as a finalist for the International Documentary Challenge and was featured at the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.
Itchy-O was voted Denver's best Avant-Garde act in 2014 and best Experimental band in 2015 by Westword .
Itchy-O has performed at events such as Riot Fest, Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Austin's Art Outdoors festival, the Stanley Film Festival, Tucson's All Souls Procession, San Francisco's Day of the Dead Festival, Atlanta's Goat Farm and Denver's Biennial of the Americas. They have played on stage with David Byrne & St. Vincent, and shared bills with Devo, Beats Antique, Warlock Pinchers, Extra Action Marching Band, The Melvins, March Fourth, and many others.
On April 8th, 2016 it was announced that itchy-O will be performing in Hobart, Tasmania at MONA FOMA's wintertime festival, Dark MOFO.
Musical style
Itchy-O is a mobile 32+ member band consisting of a drum corps/battery, taiko drummers, an electric guitarist, bass guitarist, two synthesizer players, a sampler player, a vocalist using a vocoder, a theremin player, operators of effects and various other electronic devices. The band is often accompanied by dancers/provocateurs, and Chinese lion performers. itchy-O's music is tribal in nature. The band's instruments are drums and electronics, which give their performances a “primal-futuristic” air while all members of the band wear stylized uniforms and masks so that the band is perceived as a singular entity. Each of its shows are performed with a degree of ritual.
