Jabalpur Engineering College (JEC), formerly known as Government Engineering College, Jabalpur, is an institute located in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. It was established as the Government Engineering College, Jubbulpore during the British rule in India and is the 15th oldest engineering institution of India.^[2] It is also the first institute of India to have started Electronics & Telecommunications engineering education in the country and the last educational institution set up by the British in India.^[3] The institute offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in engineering and applied sciences. JEC made an announcement in March 2013, that it is starting new courses in engineering, management, design, architecture, town planning, pharmacy, cyber and business laws.^[4]

History

JEC was established as the Government Engineering College, Jubbulpore on 7 July 1947, during the British rule in India, making it the oldest engineering institute of central India and the 15th oldest engineering college of India.^[5] It also has the oldest Electronics & Telecommunication department in India, which was started in 1947, right from its inception.^[6]

It was affiliated to the University of Sagar from 1947 to 1956, then to the University of Jabalpur, until the year 1999, and from 1999 to 2010 to Rajiv Gandhi Technical University, Bhopal, which is the State Technological University of Madhya Pradesh. The institute celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1997 while the President of India, his Excellency Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma graced the Golden Jubilee ceremony.^[7] In 1997, it was granted an autonomous institute status and in the year 2010, it was declared an autonomous university by the Government of Madhya Pradesh.^[8][9] In the year 2014, it was granted autonomy by University Grants Commission.^[10] It is a regional center and also a nodal research center of Rajiv Gandhi Technical University.^[11][12]

Admissions

• B.E.:- Admissions to B.E. degree courses were done on the basis of performance in the State level Pre-Engineering Test, MP-PET conducted every year by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board Bhopal and All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). 80% of total seats in each branch were filled by candidates of MP-PET and the remaining 20% by the candidates of AIEEE. But from 2014 onwards, admissions are carried out on the basis of Joint Entrance Exam conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education.^[13]
• B.E.(PTDC):- For the in-service personnel holding a diploma in engineering, Part Time Degree Courses (PTDC) of four-year duration are being run in the evenings since 1966. These courses were started with an intake of 20 students in each of the core branches i.e. Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics & Telecommunication departments.
• M.E.:- through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the IITs and IISc Bangalore.
• MCA:- through MP Pre-MCA examination conducted by Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board.
• MSc:- Every year 15 seats are allotted for the respective departments i.e. Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. Selection is purely based on the percentage obtained in BSc degree examination, minimum expectation is 50% for the eligibility. Departments may conduct a selection test if the number of applicants exceeds 15.
• PhD:- through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), followed by written test and Interview.

Reputation

• All the courses are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and recognised by the Directorate of Technical Education, Madhya Pradesh.^[9]
• The institute is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi for the undergraduate degrees of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics & Telecommunication and Computer Science departments.^[14]
• Careers360, a national level, student career site gave a rating of A to Jabalpur Engineering College in India and an AAA+ in Madhya Pradesh.^[15][16]
• SiliconIndia magazine ranked the institute at #55 for its Electronics & Telecommunication course and at #57 for its Mechanical department in India.^[17]
• Jabalpur Engineering College is the first in India to introduce undergraduate degree in Electronics & Telecommunication.^[6]
• Jabalpur Engineering College was honored as the "Best Government Engineering College" in India for two years in a row (2011 & 2012) by Star News.^[18]
• A survey on technical schools conducted by Digital Mailers in 2012 ranked JEC at No. 47, nationally.^[19]
• Outlook India ranked Jabalpur Engineering College at No. 34 in India, up from No. 46 in the preceding year.^[20][21]

Projects

Electrical Engineering laboratory

High Voltage Lab, made TIFAC-CORE by the Government of India.

• Lead Institution under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India funded by the World Bank for rapid development of the institute.^[22][23][24]
• CORE (Centre of Relevance & Excellence) by TIFAC of Department of Science & Technology (India).^[25]
• Transformer Repair Unit (TRU) : The unit was inaugurated on 2 February 2006 with an objective to detect & analyse defects in transformers which fail during impulse testing so that the transformer design can be improved. This unit has also taken up the repairs of old distribution transformers from agencies like Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board, Military Engineering Service, Public Works Department, Power Grid Corporation of India etc.^[26]
• High Voltage Laboratory of Electrical Engineering Department has been accredited by NABL for professional testing purpose.^[27]

Campus

"Jashan" Auditorium

JEC has been developed as a small township centred around Gokulpur and Ranjhi. It has a lush green campus of 255 acres (1.03 km²), rich in natural flora and fauna with Robertson lake as a background. The campus is well connected to the city, being 13 km from the Jabalpur Airport, 6 km away from the Jabalpur Railway Station and 9 km from the Jabalpur Bus Stand. A cafeteria called "Amraai" serves refreshments on campus. The other on-campus facilities include a State Bank of India branch, ATM, PCO and a post office. The sporting facilities include an athletic track, cricket field, football field, hockey field, basketball court, badminton court, 3 tennis courts and 8 volleyball courts. A multi-station gymnasium, open-air theatre having a capacity of 3000, two auditoriums, an on-campus college dispensary, National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme regional centres, alumni centre, common rooms for both girls and boys, Central Computing Facility, Central Computerised Library, Central Workshop. A new auditorium named "Jashan" has recently been constructed from the donation made by one of its alumni.^[28] The institute also served as the transit campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur.

Central Library

Jabalpur Engineering College houses one of the oldest and the largest technical libraries in India having more than one lac ten thousand^[29] volumes of books on science and technology including physics, chemistry, mathematics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, electronics and industrial engineering. The library also has books on humanities, competitive exam preparation, management and social sciences. The institute also subscribes to more than 23,000 journals and e-journals. The library has 40 computers and 2 servers for online access.

Extra-Curricular Activities (Technical, Cultural and Sports)

• TEDxJECollege an international conference is held annually in the month of February.^[30][31]
• Helix is one of the distinguished initiatives by students started in 2013. It is a literary fest cum conference.
• Aaghaz is the intra-college interbranch sport cum cultural fest and is held annually.^[32]
• Unofficial Magazine:- Abhiyaam ^[33]
• JEC has its own theatre club named Azaan which provides a platform for drama, acting and dance.^[34]
• Photography society named JEC Photographic Society (JPS).^[35]
• JEC has programming club named JEC Codebase.
• Kaarwaa.N..., a social volunteering organisation which works for underprivileged kids of the adjoining society,by preparing them for JNV(Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya) and many other notable works. ^[36]The Aureole’10 & Aureole 15 was the biggest tech cum cult fest of Central India. It had more than 52 technical and cultural events including the biggest “Moshpit 1.o” Rock Band Competition with 15 bands from all over India. Despite of an engineering education, the alumni have chosen diverse fields varying across business, arts, politics, social service, civil services, civic administration, banking and finance, research & development, management, diplomacy, defence, law enforcement, judiciary, media, academia, among many others. Besides, they have excelled at various spheres of engineering such as information technology, telecommunications, armaments, automotive, aerospace & aeronautics, biomedical, space research, atomic & civil nuclear research, manufacturing, power, robotics & artificial intelligence, construction, etc. and occupy a number of senior executive positions in India and abroad. • Ajai Chowdhry – Padma Bhushan, Co-founder & Chairman of HCL Enterprise, IIIT Naya Raipur and IIT Patna and former Chairman of IIT Hyderabad.
• K. S. Sudarshan - He was the fifth Sarsanghachalak (from 2000 to 2009) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the world's largest voluntary non-governmental organization.
• Sharat Saxena – Veteran Indian film, television and theatre actor.
