Jabalpur Engineering College (JEC), formerly known as Government Engineering College, Jabalpur, is an institute located in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. It was established as the Government Engineering College, Jubbulpore during the British rule in India and is the 15th oldest engineering institution of India.[2] It is also the first institute of India to have started Electronics & Telecommunications engineering education in the country and the last educational institution set up by the British in India.[3] The institute offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in engineering and applied sciences. JEC made an announcement in March 2013, that it is starting new courses in engineering, management, design, architecture, town planning, pharmacy, cyber and business laws.[4]

History

JEC was established as the Government Engineering College, Jubbulpore on 7 July 1947, during the British rule in India, making it the oldest engineering institute of central India and the 15th oldest engineering college of India.[5] It also has the oldest Electronics & Telecommunication department in India, which was started in 1947, right from its inception.[6]

It was affiliated to the University of Sagar from 1947 to 1956, then to the University of Jabalpur, until the year 1999, and from 1999 to 2010 to Rajiv Gandhi Technical University, Bhopal, which is the State Technological University of Madhya Pradesh. The institute celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1997 while the President of India, his Excellency Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma graced the Golden Jubilee ceremony.[7] In 1997, it was granted an autonomous institute status and in the year 2010, it was declared an autonomous university by the Government of Madhya Pradesh.[8][9] In the year 2014, it was granted autonomy by University Grants Commission.[10] It is a regional center and also a nodal research center of Rajiv Gandhi Technical University.[11][12]

Campus

"Jashan" Auditorium

JEC has been developed as a small township centred around Gokulpur and Ranjhi. It has a lush green campus of 255 acres (1.03 km2), rich in natural flora and fauna with Robertson lake as a background. The campus is well connected to the city, being 13 km from the Jabalpur Airport, 6 km away from the Jabalpur Railway Station and 9 km from the Jabalpur Bus Stand. A cafeteria called "Amraai" serves refreshments on campus. The other on-campus facilities include a State Bank of India branch, ATM, PCO and a post office. The sporting facilities include an athletic track, cricket field, football field, hockey field, basketball court, badminton court, 3 tennis courts and 8 volleyball courts. A multi-station gymnasium, open-air theatre having a capacity of 3000, two auditoriums, an on-campus college dispensary, National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme regional centres, alumni centre, common rooms for both girls and boys, Central Computing Facility, Central Computerised Library, Central Workshop. A new auditorium named "Jashan" has recently been constructed from the donation made by one of its alumni.[28] The institute also served as the transit campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur.

Central Library

Jabalpur Engineering College houses one of the oldest and the largest technical libraries in India having more than one lac ten thousand[29] volumes of books on science and technology including physics, chemistry, mathematics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, electronics and industrial engineering. The library also has books on humanities, competitive exam preparation, management and social sciences. The institute also subscribes to more than 23,000 journals and e-journals. The library has 40 computers and 2 servers for online access.

Besides, they have excelled at various spheres of engineering such as information technology, telecommunications, armaments, automotive, aerospace & aeronautics, biomedical, space research, atomic & civil nuclear research, manufacturing, power, robotics & artificial intelligence, construction, etc. and occupy a number of senior executive positions in India and abroad.
