Joel Macdonald (born 10 October 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL), having previously played for the Brisbane Lions.
Early life
Macdonald attended Brisbane Grammar School from 1999–2002.
Football career
He was recruited through the 2003 Rookie Draft (QLD Zone) from Mt Gravatt. He was elevated to the senior list at the end of the 2003 season and made his debut for the Brisbane Lions in Round 10, 2004 against Melbourne.
Early in the 2006 season Macdonald injured his Anterior cruciate ligament, which resulted in him missing the remainder of 2006 and the first half of the 2007 season. The 2008 season was considered to be the best career performance for Joel Macdonald. After the 2009 AFL season the Brisbane Lions delisted Macdonald, along with 11 other players.
On 15 December 2009, Macdonald was drafted to Melbourne with the first selection in the Pre-season Draft.[1]
Macdonald was used as utility back as he can play variety of positions in the back line, such as half back flank, centre half back, back pocket and fullback.
He announced his retirement on 16 August 2013.[2]
Business career
In July 2013, Macdonald founded Liquorun, an on-demand alcohol delivery service with two other Melbourne players, James Strauss and Rohan Bail. Liquorun expanded its delivery options in July 2014 to include fast food, operating in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.[3]
Liquorun has evolved into an e-commerce platform, with delivery now powered by another of Macdonalds companies, GetSwift, allowing retailers and other businesses to deliver their products to consumers within one hour. GetSwift was one of five companies to recently secure funding from BlueChilli’s $10 million venture capital fund and is in talks with a number of US retailers.[4]
