John Abdo is an American health and fitness expert, businessman, nutritionist and motivational speaker.[1] He formerly worked as a strength coach for the U.S. Olympic team.[2] He was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2007,[3][4] and has been professionally involved in the fitness profession for more than four decades.[5] Abdo markets his own line of health products, including fitness equipment, Training DVDs, CDs and fitness programs.[4] He has authored and co-authored several books including Body Engineering with Kenneth Dachman, which includes techniques for projecting a new body image.[6][7]

His inventions (including a machine for "abdominal aerobics", the AB-DOer) are claimed to have 20 million users.[4][5] His AB-Doer was particularly popular, and has earned several hundred million dollars.[8] Olympic competitors including speed-skater Bonnie Blair and track star Quincy Watts garnered Gold Medals with him as their trainer. From 1985 to 1997, he had a syndicated television program, Training and Nutrition 2000,[9] which TV Guide said was "the most sophisticated fitness show on television."[4] A recurrent theme in his work is that exterior appearances are important, but that a healthy inside is paramount.[9] He works as a personal trainer in Santa Barbara, California.[10]

Abdo was the National Spokesperson for Fitness Challenge Foundation.[4]
