John Coldbrook Hanbury-Williams

Sir John Coldbrook Hanbury-Williams KCVO (28 May 1892 – 10 August 1965) was a British courtier, businessman and banker.

Hanbury-Williams was the son of Major-General Sir John Hanbury-Williams and Annie Emily Reiss. He became a Gentleman Usher to George V in 1931, and was subsequent invested as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. He served as Gentleman Usher to Edward VIII in 1936, before becoming a Director of the Bank of England that same year. He held the position until 1963, and was knighted in 1950.[1] Between 1936 and 1965 Hanbury-Williams held the office of Lieutenant of the City of London.[2] He was Gentleman Usher to George VI between 1937 and 1946, and was Extra Gentleman Usher to the King between 1946 and 1952.

Between 1946 and 1962 he was chairman of Courtaulds between 1946 and 1962. From 1952 to 1965 he was Extra Gentleman Usher to Elizabeth II. Hanbury-Williams served as High Sheriff of the County of London twice; in 1943 and 1958.[3]

He married Princess Zenaida Cantacuzene, daughter of Major-General Prince Mikhail Cantacuzène, 2nd Count Speransky and Julia Dent Grant, granddaughter of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, on 1 November 1928 in Washington, D.C.
