John Hancock (born 1976 as John Langley Hayward) is an Australian businessman. He is the son of Gina Rinehart and grandson of the late mining magnate Lang Hancock.[1][2]

Early childhood and education

John Hancock was born John Langley Hayward.[3] He has a younger sister Bianca Rinehart and two half sisters Ginia Rinehart and Hope Welker. He changed his surname to Hancock,[4] tribute to his grandfather after a dispute with his mining magnate mother Gina Rinehart. His father is Englishman Greg Milton.[5] who later changed his name to Greg Hayward.[3] Hancock was educated abroad at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Boston in the United States.[6]

Trust fund case

In 2010, Hancock and his sisters Hope Welker and Bianca Rinehart launched supreme court action on their mother in relation to the operation of family trust fund setup by the late grandfather.[4]

John quoted as responding to a question about living off the family trust fund:[7]

Well it'd be nice if I was, but I have all the bad things about having money and none of the good things.

Despite his difference with his mother, he still loves her very much[8] and have indicated they agree 90 percent of the time.[4] It is the 10 percent which causes the difficulties.[4]

The NSW Supreme Court handed down its decision by appointing Bianca Rinehart as trustee of the Hope Margaret Hancock Trust.[9] Their mother already agreed to step aside as trustee and wanted consultation on who should replace her.[9]
