Biography

Early years

Born in New Jersey, Jonah Tolchin's musical taste was nurtured by his parents. Jonah attend Princeton Friends School in Princeton,NJ and went on to attend High Mowing School in Wilton, NH. When he was thirteen, his best friend learned the guitar, and decided to learn too. One day after he got in trouble at school, he felt depressed and looked up the "Blues" genre on iTunes. He felt intensely connected to the music, and started playing along with every Blues recording he could get his hands on, learning the solos by ear. From there, his musical explorations led him to the folk music that heavily influences his music today.[2]

Musical career

When Tolchin was fifteen, blues legend Ronnie Earl heard him play at a music store, took him out to lunch and asked Jonah to play with him onstage. Tolchin says, "It was a really beautiful gesture. It was amazing to have that sort of validation from such a legend. I thought, 'I guess i can do something with this.'"[3]

Jonah continued to play music through high school with his band Uncle Fran's Breakfast. When high school ended, he struck out on his own, forsaking college for a chance in music.[3]

In 2012, Tolchin released his first full-length album, Criminal Man, so named after the first song he ever wrote at the age of 15. The album was released independently, and received radio airplay. Soon thereafter, Tolchin was asked to play the Newport Folk Festival.[3]

Tolchin followed Criminal Man with the 5 Dollar EP, his first collaboration with record producer Marvin Etzioni.[4]

Tolchin signed with Yep Roc Records in 2014, and released his second full-length album, Clover Lane, in 2014.[3] In August 2016 he released the album Thousand Mile High.[5]
