José del Barrio
José del Barrio Puerta (Madrid, 1983) is a Spanish entrepreneur and investor. He is the co-founder and former CEO of La Nevera Roja, one the leading food delivery platforms in Spain, and current founding partner and CEO of venture capital firm Samaipata Ventures.
Education and professional career
Del Barrio holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from Universidad Carlos III in Madrid (2001-2006).[1] After university, del Barrio moves to Bolivia to work as a volunteer for half a year, before starting his career as a strategy consultant in PricewaterhouseCoopers (2007-2011). During these years he meets his future co-founder, Iñigo Juantegui, and both start working on the idea of launching La Nevera Roja, after working on a project for a food delivery firm.
La Nevera Roja
In 2011, del Barrio, along with co-founder Iñigo Juantegui, launches La Nevera Roja, an online food delivery platform, that intermediates between restaurants and consumers. The start-up is born with 10,000 euros from each of the founders[2] and gradually earns the trust of top Spanish Internet investors, such as Nicolás Luca de Tena, CEO of NextChance and founder of Multiastencia, or Eduardo Diez-Hochletneir amongst others.
In 2014, Spanish/Italian media group Mediaset becomes a shareholder via its venture capital fund, Ad4ventures, through a media for equity agreement, exchanging a share of equity for advertising space on national TV.[3]
This bet for national television, as well as for smartphones –through which 40% of all orders were made by 2015– are considered two of the pillars behind the decisive push for the company.[4]
After less than four years of operations, del Barrio and Juantegui managed to position the company as a market leader in Spain, with a 50% market share in the two most strategic cities: Madrid and Barcelona. The business grew during these years at an average monthly rate of 20%, reaching by the year 2015, 600.000 users and 5.000 partner restaurants, who made more than 40 million euros with La Nevera Roja.
In February 2015, del Barrio and Juantegui sold the business to Global Online Takeaway Group, part of German Internet company Rocket Internet, for 80 million euros; one of the largest exits of the Spanish Internet sector up to that moment.[5]
In April 2016, Rocket Internet sells La Nevera Roja, along with three other portfolio companies (PizzaBo, Hellofood Brasil y Hellofood México) to food delivery giant, Just Eat.
Samaipata Ventures
After selling off La Nevera Roja in 2015, del Barrio sets up a venture capital fund, Samaipata Ventures, to invest in early stage technological start-ups (seed and series A investments).[6]
The fund specializes in two online business models: marketplaces (only markets that bring together consumers and suppliers) and e-commerce (online shops) (tiendas en la red), with average entrance tickets of 400.000 euros, sparing up to 3 million euros for future rounds. By the end of 2016, Samaipata Ventures managed a portfolio of 5 start-ups: Deporvillage, CornerJob, Jinn, Foodchéri and OnTruck, with the objective of reaching a total 22 investments in 4 years.[7]
