Joseph Shih or Ting Joseph Shih (Chinese: 石定; pinyin: Shí Dìng) is a politician in the Republic of China. He was the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013-2014.[4]

2013 Korean crisis

Due to the ongoing 2013 North Korean crisis, in mid April 2013 Shih said that the ROC government has no plan to immediately evacuate the more than 16,000 Taiwanese out from South Korea currently living there, but he added that the government is closely monitoring any latest development on the situation. He added that the Taipei Mission in Korea has prepared a task force and is ready for any possible scenario.[5]

Taiwanese fisherman shooting incident

After the shooting incident of Taiwanese fisherman by Philippine government vessel on 9 May 2013 at the disputed water in South China Sea, Shih was told that the shooting was a warning shoot to drive the Taiwanese vessel out of the disputed water. However, he denied it was warning shooting because the ROC Coast Guard Administration discovered 32 bullet holes on the Taiwanese vessel. He then summoned Antonio Basilio, Philippine Representative to Taiwan, to explain Philippine stance on the matter. He also demanded the Philippine government to officially apologize over the killing instead of only expressing regret.[6][7][8]
