In sixth form, year 12 and 13 students study for the International Baccalaureate diploma.[2]

History

Original Foundation of JESS Jumeirah

JESS was founded because there was a need for education to be provided for these children who were mainly the sons/daughters of English speaking (mostly British) expat families working for the major companies that were operating in Dubai - companies such as Dubai Aluminium, Dubai Petroleum and Schlumberger. The only other suitable school for expat children was then Dubai English Speaking School (DESS), which was over-subscribed.

JESS first opened in an apartment in a building near the Dubai Clock Tower in 1975 with only 17 pupils in 2 classes (one for the older children, one for the younger ones). In 1976, demand for places meant that the school outgrew the apartment and it relocated to the villa of the Headteacher, Miss Blue, which was located near the veterinary hospital. There were three portakabins in the garden. In 1977, H.H. Sheikh Rashid granted the Governors a parcel of land in what is now near Safa Park in the Jumeirah district of Dubai and work began constructing the school that stands today.

Foundation of JESS Primary and Secondary on Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches was founded in order to meet the demand for high-quality British education as Dubai grew in the first years of the new Millennium. JESS Arabian Ranches was the first of the ‘community school’ model in Dubai where a school was built as part of a significant planned housing development. JESS was built within the Emaar Arabian Ranches villa development. JESS Arabian Ranches opened in September 2005 with 573 pupils - an almost full Primary school and the Secondary school offered Years 7 and 8. It offers a British curriculum throughout the Primary School in the Secondary to GCSE. JESS Arabian Ranches opened a Sixth Form in 2009, following the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, reflecting the increasingly international mix of the children in Dubai. It is now at capacity, running from Foundation 1 to Year 13, starting with the Curriculum of England and Wales, including GCSEs and IGCSEs. Students then move on to study the highly acclaimed International Baccalaureate attaining an excellent score average of 36. In 2017 there will also be an offering of BTEC courses in Art, Business and Sport.
