Juying Secondary School (Abbreviation: JYSS) is a government co-educational neighbourhood secondary school in Jurong West, Singapore. The school was established in December 1995.

History

Juying Secondary School was founded in 1995 with the appointment of Mrs Lee Yin Ling as its pioneer principal. The school started with 10 classes of Secondary One pupils which were housed on the 4th level of Pioneer Secondary School, our holding school, for six months while the former Jurong Institute was being retrofitted to become Juying's permanent premises.

When the school moved into its permanent premises on 12 June 1995, only three quarters of the retrofitting had been completed. The following two and a half years saw the continual upgrading and improvement of facilities. In June 1997, an extension project was started to enable the school to become single session in the year 2000.

The school was officially opened by Mr Peter Chen, Senior Minister of State for Education and MP for Hong Kah GRC, on 18 July 1997.

Today, the school has a total enrolment of approximately 900 pupils in 25 classes covering Secondary 1 to Secondary 5. The school premises were upgraded under the Programme for Rebuilding and Improving Existing Schools (PRIME) from 2010 to 2012.

The upgraded sprawling premises include exciting new facilities such as 2 dance studios, a sunken plaza for outdoor performances, a synthetic field, a gymnasium, a bigger multi-purpose hall, an indoor sports hall, a rock climbing wall for outdoor education, a repelling wall for high elements confidence training, a health & fitness area, a specialised iMac studio, multiple computer laboratories, dedicated counselling rooms and an afterschool recreation room.

School Philosophy

"Oysters are known for their ability to draw sediments, nutrients and algae in and over their gills to create shiny, beautiful pearls. Likewise, we wish for Juying to be our students’ oyster. We are a nurturing family for students of all abilities and backgrounds as we believe that every student is unique and every student can learn. We aspire to enhance and amplify the individual talents of all students, and develop them to be life-long learners with strength of character, such that they may, like pearls, shine and illuminate any organisation they may enter in the future.""

Students who are scheduled are to speak will gather their classmates during recess and these students will form the crowd to listen to the speakers. Students are given opportunities to speak on a variety of given topics, such as racial harmony or friendship. They may also read news articles or stories aloud. We also encourage students to use this platform to speak on topics they are passionate about, such as animal protection or books they enjoy reading.

Juying's unique Secondary 3 VIA/TIE trips aim to increase the level of student ownership and involvement in the VIA/TIE process, so as to better achieve the following objectives of the VIA/TIE trips:

  1. Develop in our students the 21st Century Competencies of global awareness and cross-cultural skills and sensitivities;
  2. Expose students to Asia, especially South East Asia, and sensitise them to Singapore’s place in the world; and
  3. Deepen students’ commitment and rootedness to Singapore.

To plan for the trip, Secondary 3 students go through the following steps:

Stage 1 · Identify a social issue that they want to learn more about.

Stage 2 · Conduct online research on how that issue is being tackled in Singapore. · Select a country that has done well in tackling that issue to visit and learn from.

Stage 3 · Craft their desired learning outcomes from their VIA/TIE trip.

Stage 4 · Work with their form teachers to plan the trip itinerary and select the trip vendor.

Following their VIA/TIE trip, the Sec 3 classes share their experience and learning with the school during their trip.

As a follow-up to the VIA/TIE trip, and to provide the students opportunities to further develop themselves and apply what they have learnt, the Sec 3 classes will be planning their own (Values-In-Action (VIA) activities to tackle a social issue within the Singapore’s context.

In the process, students develop self-confidence and self-directedness while becoming more concerned global citizens and active contributors to tackle social issues around them.

Special Programme. Outdoor Education

The school has embarked on designing programmes that will provide opportunities for pupils to be developed cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally through the outdoor experience. The school aims to develop active and healthy students, who possess the school R3IGHT values to become future-ready and useful citizens.
