Karthik Subbaraj is an Indian film director. He made a short film "Kaatchipizhai" in Madurai, which was selected for "Naalaya Iyakunar". He went on to make his directorial debut with the 2012 low-budget thriller film Pizza which was a commercial success.

His venture Jigarthanda which deals with the Madurai underworld was released in September 2014 and received critical acclaim. The film starred Siddharth, Lakshmi Menon, Bobby Simha and Karunakaran.[1][2] His latest venture was Iravi, stars SJ Suryaa, Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby simha, Radharavi, opening to critical acclaim.

Life and career

Karthik Subbaraj studied Mechatronics at Thiagarajar College of Engineering. He attended SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, Madurai.[3] During his college days he used to perform lot of stage shows with different theme of Skits. Karthik's father Gajaraj is an actor who portrayed supporting roles in films like Onaayum Aattukuttiyum and Mundasupatti.[4]

He was intended to direct "Jigarthanda" first and due to budget constrain he came with the story "Pizza" in which he introduced 7.1 sound system. Pizza was remade in Hindi and Kannada.[5] Then he directed his dream movie "Jigarthanda" with actors Bobby Simha and Sidharth which also received positive reviews and yielded Simha a national award.[6] He was praised by Tamil actor Vijay and legendary director Mani Rathnam.[7][8] His third movie "Iraivi" opened to positive reviews and praised him for portraying the way the current society handles women. Also how the men's attitude and behaviours impact women's from different layers of life.

Controversies

Kathiresan, who produced Jigarthanda alleged that Karthik spent more budget and also refused to budge when the violent sequences to be cut short.[9]

Producer Gnanavel Raja, who distributed the film Iraivi is peeved with Subbaraj, and in a Whatsapp audio message, regretted being associated with the film. He said that Karthik doesn't know the pain of becoming a director as he's never worked as an assistant director to anyone. He also revealed that Karthik overshot the budget and this resulted in some misunderstanding with the producer C.V Kumar. It is also being said that the producers’ council has decided to take action against Subbaraj for portraying the producer in poor light.[10]
