Kasmalieva & Djumaliev
Kasmalieva & Djumaliev is a visual arts couple from Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan that consists of Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev.[1]
Kasmalieva and Djumaliev both followed academic studies in fine arts, at first in Kyrgyzstan and subsequently in the Soviet Union, at the time of the Gorbachevs reform politics of perestroika. The transition of living in the Soviet Union until the continuation in the Kyrgyz Republic are well recognizable in the first documentaries and photographs of the couple, like in the effect the communist union had on the identity of the lives of the Kyrgyz people.[1]
An important work of the couple from 2006 is called A New Silk Road: Algorithm of Survival and Hope, which is about the influence of the growing globalization along the century old Silk Road which passes Kyrgyzstan. Both artists are curator for international exhibitions of the cultural center ArtEast in Bishkek.[1]
In 2010 Kasmalieva and Djumaliev were honored with a Prince Claus Award from the Netherlands. The jury acknowledged "their path-breaking art practice, their important contributions to contemporary culture in Central Asia, and the chances they offer young artists."[1]
