Kaweah Indian Nation

The Kaweah Indian Nation, Inc., is a civic group interested in cultivating a Native American identity. The group is named after the Cahuilla people (which is also pronounced "kah-WEE-yah") and has applied for status as a federally recognized tribe in the USA in the 1980s, a petition which was denied.[1][2]

Recently, scam artists have sold purported citizenships in the non-recognized tribe, particularly to Mexican nationals who have entered the US illegally.[3] Member of one US tribe, the Kickapoo Tribe of Texas, hold dual citizenship with the USA and Mexico due to historical reasons.
