The King Khalid Foundation is a charitable organization established in Saudi Arabia in 2001 by the family of the late King Khalid, who ruled the country from 1975 until his death in 1982.
The Foundation is a royal, family-run organization and is managed by a Board of Trustees composed of a minimum of nine (9) and maximum of eleven (11) members. The Board of Trustees is the highest authority, which draws up the general policies and specifies the Foundation’s functions for the purpose of attaining its objectives and supervises its implementation. The Foundation has been managed since inception by the Director General, Princess Banderi A.R. Al Faisal.[1]
Overview
Since establishment, the Foundation has accomplished a number of development and research projects through funding social and economic development projects including training, capacity building, research, and policy development programs; and by awarding the most outstanding citizens and corporations for their contribution to the social and economic development of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.[1]
Projects
- Development and implementation of "The KKF Model for Community Development in the Qilwah Province" which is the first time in the country that a local community has been engaged in actively identifying and advocating for their development needs.
- Implementation of a number of training and capacity building programs, such as “Capacity Building in the Social Participatory Development field,” dedicated to building and transferring knowledge related to sustainable development and governance.
- The establishment of the "Saudi Bee-keepers Cooperative" as a model for small businesses to work together for their mutual benefit.
- The “Warmth Campaign” – the first emergency relief project of its kind designed to help the areas of the country affected by extreme cold weather.[1]
Research
- Women and Child Abuse Prevention Law” which has been adopted by the Government of Saudi Arabia - the first time the legislation developed and proposed by an NGO has been adopted by the government.
- A research study into developing an "Islamic Orphans Village Organization"[1]
Program Department
King Khalid Foundation’s Program Department aims to provide funding and support for training, capacity building, technical assistance, community development and emergency relief projects in the field of social and economic development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Program Department consists of three specialized Centers each focusing on a different aspect of social and economic development:

A one-stop-shop for tools and information to help advance non profit organization’s mission and vision in a smart, cost-efficient way. Resource Clearinghouse offers the following services:
- Information and resources for non profit organizations, both funding agencies (foundations) and grantees
- Information about rules and regulations for forming and operating non profit organizations in KSA
- Definitions related to non profit sector in order to clarify the terminology
- Access to best practice examples in non profit leadership, management and performance (national and international)
- Access to "How To" manuals and guides on strategic planning, change management, capacity building, evaluation, budgeting, fundraising, technology integration, and other relevant topics
- List of non profit related national, regional, and international conferences, round-tables, workshops and seminars
4) Non Profit Organization Online Community Portal
Online portal to include the following:
- Discussion forum for non profit members to discuss various topics and share information
- Links to other international non profit portals and websites to facilitate information access and exchange

5) Partnership Building
Facilitating and encouraging non profit collaboration through:
- Organizing national and international workshops, conferences and meetings focusing on non profit management and development, responsible philanthropy, philanthropic best practices, etc.
- Facilitating Public-Private Partnerships between non profit organizations, foundations, businesses and government for the benefit of the local communities
- Organizing regular meetings and round tables for local non profit organizations to exchange and share information
- Featuring online successful partnerships and collaborative efforts in order to promote and encourage collaboration among foundations and grantees
NPO Center Projects
Columbia Business School and King Khalid Foundation Executive Education Program for Nonprofit Organizations, 23-27 May 2009:
King Khalid Foundation is funding the development and implementation of the first of its kind, high quality Executive Education Program for Nonprofit Leaders in KSA. The program will be custom designed and implemented by Columbia Business School.
The goal of the program is to strengthen the philanthropic and development sectors by building capacity and improving skills of nonprofit leaders in KSA. Our program offers a mixture of general management and functional management courses and is highly interactive, case-based and practical. The program aims to train 30 NPO leaders from KSA in management, strategic planning, leadership, team-building, resource management, budgeting, negotiation, conflict resolution and other relevant topics.[2]
Al Nahda Philanthropic Society Strategic Planning Project, October 2008 – December 2009:
King Khalid Foundation is funding and monitoring the implementation of the strategic planning process at the Al Nahda Philanthropic Society. The goal of this project is to complete the 2010-2012 Strategic Plan as well as annual Operational Plans for each department. The purpose of the strategic planning process is to improve governance, structural, management and operational efficiency of the organization and enhance the impact of Al Nahda programs and services within the communities it serves.
Strategic Planning Manual for Nonprofit Organizations in KSA, August, 2008 – March 2009:
King Khalid Foundation is funding the development of the Strategic Planning Manual for Nonprofit Organizations. The goal of this project is to create an easy-to-use strategic planning guide that would help nonprofit organization in conducting and managing the strategic planning process within their organizations. The manual is based on the international best practices and customized to fit the needs of the local nonprofit organizations. Once completed, the manual will be available free of charge to all interested nonprofit organizations in KSA.[1]
Projects Support Center (PSC)
Dedicated to providing effective and strategic grant-making assistance for training and community development projects.
The Center's Focus and Activities Include:
1) Grant-making
- Soliciting proposals from NPOs and community groups focused on economic development, social change, training and capacity building
- Evaluating proposals and making grants in the following development areas:
- Economic development
- Local community development
- Social change
- Education and training
- Capacity-building
2) Training
Training programs focus on the following:
- Strengthening the capacity of local development practitioners (NPOs, government officials, municipalities, community groups, etc.)
- Identifying development needs
- Training the trainers
- Developing and implementing community-based projects
- Community-based research
- Other training
3) Partnership Building
Facilitating and encouraging local community and development collaboration through:
- Organizing intellectual debates focused on the development issues
- Organizing national and international workshops focusing on community development, social change, capacity building, etc.
- Facilitating Public-Private Partnerships between non profit organizations, local communities and businesses and government for the benefit of local communities
4) Monitoring and Evaluation
- Oversight of project implementation
- Measuring the impact and effectiveness of the emergency support
- Using lessons learned to inform future grant-making activities
Emergency Support Center (ESC)
Dedicated to providing effective and strategic grant-making assistance for disaster and emergency relief.
The Center's Focus and Activities include:
1) Establishing Emergency Guidelines and Criteria
- Defining emergency and disaster situations based on internationally recognized standards
- Evaluating emergency situations and determining the most appropriate type of support (e.g. funding, in-kind donations, services, training, etc.)
- Staying abreast of research and best practices on emergency and disaster support
2) Providing Emergency Grants
- Researching and identifying emergency situations on an ongoing basis
- Developing internal and soliciting external emergency assistance proposals
- Evaluating proposals and making grants
3) Monitoring and Evaluation
- Oversight of project implementation
- Measuring the impact and effectiveness of the emergency support
- Using lessons learned to inform future grant-making activities
4) Partnership building
Facilitating and encouraging collaboration through:
- Identifying potential grantee partners in advance and exploring partnerships and cooperation with other grant-makers
- Working closely with government agencies to coordinate emergency efforts
- Working with media agencies to inform the public about the emergency situation and the support[1]
Emergency Support Center Projects
Diff’e Campaign December 2007 – January 2008:
Initiated originally by the family of King Khalid. King Khalid Foundation has funded and promoted a campaign to alleviate the impact of a severe cold wave in the northern part of Saudi Arabia. The campaign’s goal was to help affected communities and to increase awareness of the problem. More than 30 trucks loaded with clothing articles and other winter supplies were distributed through local charities in four different regions in the Northern Province. The wide media coverage resulted in more winter aid from different government and non-government agencies.[3]
