Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner

Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner (born March 23, 1969) is an American author, speaker, radio host, co-founder and the Executive Director/CEO of MomsRising.org and board President of the MomsRising Education Fund. In May 2006, Joan Blades and Rowe-Finkbeiner co-founded MomsRising, a national online and on-the-ground grassroots organization that supports and promotes policies aimed at improving family economic security; helping families, children, and businesses thrive; and to ending discrimination against women and mothers.

Media and publications

Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner is the host of "Breaking Through with Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner - Powered by MomsRising" [1] that airs on 1480AM in Washington, D.C., the 7th largest media market in the country, and also airs on other stations across the nation, on the WeAct Radio Network, TuneIn's Progressive Voices Network, as well as on iTunes as a podcast.[2]

Rowe-Finkbeiner has been interviewed by major national as well as local media, including CNN, The Katie Couric Show, MSNBC, Up With Chris Hayes,[3] The Today Show, Good Morning America, Dennis Miller Show, NOW With David Brancaccio, To the Contrary, the Laura Flanders Show, New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Stephanie Miller Show, NPR, BBC, KPFA Radio, KUOW Radio and more.

In 2006, The Motherhood Manifesto, which Rowe-Finkbeiner co-authored with MomsRising co-founder and board President, Joan Blades (who is also co-founder of MoveOn.org), was published. Released on Mother’s Day, the book includes an agenda for change, to make parenting and the workplace compatible and improve the lives of families. In 2007, The Motherhood Manifesto won the Ernesta Drinker Ballard Book Prize. The book is also the basis for a documentary film of the same name, which aired on PBS stations across the country.

In 2005, Rowe-Finkbeiner wrote The F-Word: Feminism in Jeopardy, which was awarded first place by the Independent Book Publishers Association in the category of Women’s Issues in 2005.[4]

Rowe-Finkbeiner has contributed to several books, including: The Maternal Is Political: Women Writers at the Intersection of Motherhood and Social Change; The Essential Hip Mama: Writing from the Cutting Edge of Motherhood; Courageous Parents, Confident Kids; and Current Controversies: The Wage Gap.

She is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and has also been published in many outlets including Politico, USA Today, and the Washington Post. She frequently writes about public policy, family economic security, motherhood, women's issues, health, economic inequality and new feminism for blogs and magazines.

Speaking

Rowe-Finkbeiner is also a regular public speaker and has spoken on family economic security, women's issues, community engagement and grassroots organizing, and other issues in numerous forums, including SXSW, the National Press Club, the Aspen Institute, The White House (including the White House Forum on Citizen-Based Innovators in 2012, the White House Summit on Working Families in 2014, and the White House Symposium on Transformative Family Engagement in 2014), Center for American Progress, The National Democratic Convention, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, NetRoots Nation, Democracy Fest, Citizen University, the League of Women Voters National Conference, the International Leadership Association Conference, Campaign for America’s Future Take Back the American Dream Conference, Seattle Town Hall, numerous universities, union events, rallies, and more. She has also testified before Congress, state legislatures, and city councils about legislation affecting family economic security.

Career

From 2006 to present, Rowe-Finkbeiner has served Executive Director/CEO of MomsRising.org.

From 1996–2006, Rowe-Finkbeiner worked as a political and grassroots engagement consultant and policy analyst for numerous organizations, including League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, Audubon Society, NW Ecosystem Alliance, McDanel Land Foundation, Washington Conservation Voters, Washington Environmental Alliance for Voter Education, Atmosphere Alliance.

From 1992 to 1996, she was Political and Field Director of the Washington Conservation Voters, where she created a model statewide grassroots program to elect, endorse, and support environmentally responsible candidates.

Rowe-Finkbeiner serves on the board of the Economic Opportunity Institute, and as a Parenting Magazine Mom Congress Advisory Board Member. She was board President for the Washington Environmental Alliance for Voter Education (WEAVE), an organization heavily involved in electoral education, and served on the Executive Committee of the Washington Conservation Voters board.

Personal

Rowe-Finkbeiner was born in Chicago, Illinois and later moved to Maryland. She attended Springhill Lake Elementary (Prince George's County Public Schools) in Greenbelt, Maryland just outside Washington, D.C. Rowe-Finkbeiner moved to Columbia, Maryland where she attended Oakland Mills Middle School and Oakland Mills High School. Rowe-Finkbeiner studied biochemistry and political economy at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington from which she graduated.

Rowe-Finkbeiner is married to former Republican Washington State Senator Bill Finkbeiner. They live in Washington State with their two children.
