Kurt Fredrick Vollers (born April 4, 1979 in San Gabriel, California) is a former American football offensive lineman in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame.
Early years
Vollers attended Servite High School, where he played as a defensive tackle and as a senior registered 79 tackles and 8 sacks, while earning USA Today honorable mention All-American and All-state honors. He contributed to his team winning league titles in 1995 and 1996. He also practice basketball, track and baseball. As a junior, he was the league champion in discus and shot put.
He accepted a scholarship to play for the University of Notre Dame. He was converted to an offensive guard as a freshman. The next year he started three games at left tackle. He became the regular starter at right tackle in his last two seasons.
Professional career
Indianapolis Colts (first stint)
Vollers was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent after not being selected in the 2002 NFL Draft. He was waived before the start of the season on September 1 and signed to the practice squad.[1]
Dallas Cowboys
On October 23, 2002, the Dallas Cowboys signed Vollers from the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.[2] The next year he started 8 games at right tackle, replacing an injured Ryan Young.
In 2004, he was passed on the depth chart by Torrin Tucker, until regaining his starter role at right tackle for the last 3 games of the season.[3] The next year a right wrist injury limited his playing time during training camp and was waived injured on September 3, 2005.[4]
Indianapolis Colts (second stint)
On November 16, 2005, he was signed as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts.[5] He played in 2 games and was inactive in 6. He wasn't re-signed at the end of the season.
Personal life
On April 17, 2010, Vollers pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking charges for distributing over 100 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana. He received a 30-month sentence in federal prison.[6]
