Kyle Gurrieri (born March 10, 1998) is an American soccer player who played for Wilmington Hammerheads in United Soccer League.
Gurrieri grew up in Totowa, New Jersey and attended Passaic Valley Regional High School, transferring out after his freshman year to join the U.S. Soccer U17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida starting in September 2013.[1]
Youth career
Gurrieri began playing soccer at the age of 5 in his home town's recreational league. After showing a natural coordination and control of the ball it did not take him long to discover that soccer would be all he wanted to do. It was difficult finding children in his neighborhood that wanted to play the game as much as he did. His town's youth sports programs where more encouraging of other American sports and travel soccer was non-existent. This led his parents on a mission to find places for him to train to satisfy his desire and develop his technique. Too young to play travel soccer at the time, Gurrieri would train year round as many as 5 days a week with three different programs and picking up games where ever he could. When home Gurrieri would spend hours on his own playing with a soccer ball. Although his parents were concerned about having him burn out by doing too much, he insisted that he did not want to stop and instead asked to find more places to play. Gurrieri continues to maintain a rigorous training schedule today.
At 14, Gurrieri was accepted to play for U16 NJSA-04 Academy in the US Soccer Developmental Academy League. The club has since gone through a merger and is now New Jersey Cedar Stars Academy (NJCSA).
Soccer has taken Gurrieri around the world in countries such as Spain, Denmark, and Austria including a training stint in England playing with England Championship League sides: Brentford FC and Nottingham Forest.
With his leadership and ability to control the central midfield, Gurrieri has become known for his passing accuracy, distribution, and defensive strength which made him a consistent call up for the U14, U15, and U17 U.S. National Team Programs.
Club career
Gurrieri signed an amateur contract with United Soccer League side Wilmington Hammerheads on July 16, 2015.[2]
