English Vinglish is a 2012 Indian comedy-drama film directed and written by Gauri Shinde. The film stars Sridevi, with Mehdi Nebbou, Priya Anand, and Adil Hussain featuring in supporting roles. The film revolves around the life of an Indian housewife, Shashi Godbole, who is often mocked by her family for her poor command in English language. English Vinglish released on 5 October 2012. Made on a small budget of 150 million (US$2.2 million),[1] the film grossed over 400 million (US$5.9 million) at the box office.[2]

English Vinglish garnered awards and nominations in a variety of categories with particular praise for its direction and the performance of the lead actress. At the 58th Filmfare Awards, the film received four nominations, including Best Film and Best Debut Director for Shinde. Shinde went on to win her category. Sridevi received the Best Actress nominations at several awards ceremonies, including Filmfare, IIFA, Screen, Zee Cine, and Star Guild. At the 11th Stardust Awards, the film earned five nominations, going on to win Best Drama Actress and Best Debut Director.
