In 2009, Cruz played for the Greenville Astros of the Rookie-level Appalachian League.[1] In 2010, the Astros assigned Cruz to the Lexington Legends of the Class A South Atlantic League. Cruz was named the pitcher of the month for Lexington in July 2010.[2] He was named the pitcher of the month for the Lancaster JetHawks of the Class A-Advanced California League for April 2013.[3]

After the 2013 season, the Astros added Cruz to their 40-man roster.[4] Following a 2014 season split between Houston's Class AA and Class AAA affiliates, Cruz started the 2015 season with the Class AAA Fresno Grizzlies. The Astros released him after the 2015 season.
