MLB Pennant Race is a baseball simulator released to the PlayStation on September 30, 1996 by Sony Computer Entertainment America. It was the first baseball game to be released for the system.[1] The game takes place during the 1996 Major League Baseball season. Rosters and statistics are accurate as of the 1995 Major League Baseball season.
Reception
IGN criticized the game as being "dated".[2] They claimed that it would "be more appropriate as a computer game", citing the batting cursor as one of the main problems of the game. They ultimately gave the game a 5/10.
CNET gave the game 7/10.[3] Problems cited include the frequency of errors, the slowness of the game, the long commentary (provided by Jerry Coleman between innings), and the lack of stats for the "no-name benchwarmers". They did, however, praise the graphics, camerawork, and controls.
Scott Marriott of All Game Guide criticized the graphics as being "mixed", praising the stadium details while criticizing the player models and animations. He also remarked that the players do not have team logos on their uniforms. Marriott also criticized the batting cursor, comparing it to "swinging a tennis racket". Among the five batting views in the game, Marriott found only the "medium" view acceptable. He also remarked that the game is lacking an adjustable season. Marriott also commented that double plays are rare due to "rather quick runners". He also complained about the lengthy load times (10–15 seconds for a side change).
