Magical Girl Raising Project (魔法少女育成計画 Mahō Shōjo Ikusei Keikaku) is a Japanese light novel series written by Asari Endō and illustrated by Maruino. Takarajimasha has published nine volumes since 2012 under their Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! Bunko imprint. The series is licensed in English by Yen Press. A manga adaptation with art by Pochi Edoya was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine between September 2014 and October 2015. An anime television series adaptation by Lerche began airing in Japan from October 2016.
Plot
A popular social game known as the Magical Girl Raising Project has the ability to grant players a 1 in 10,000 chance to become a real life magical girl. Each of the magical girls possess unique abilities and earn Magical Candies by protecting people and performing good deeds. However, at some point, the administration has decided that sixteen magical girls in a certain city is too many, announcing they will cut the number in half by having the magical girl with the fewest Magical Candies each week lose their powers. As the rules of the game become more twisted, the girls eventually find themselves dragged into a life or death battle against each other.
Characters
- Snow White (スノーホワイト Sunō Howaito) / Koyuki Himekawa (姫河 小雪 Himekawa Koyuki)

- The main protagonist. A well-known Magical Girl within N-City who has always dreamed of becoming a Magical Girl. She wears a white schoolgirl uniform covered with flowers as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to hear the voices of people in danger.
- Ripple (リップル Rippuru) / Kano Sazanami (細波 華乃 Sazanami Kano)
- Voiced by: Manami Numakura[1]
- A high school student living alone. She wears a ninja-style attire as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to never miss a shot with her shurikens.
- Swim Swim (スイムスイム Suimu Suimu) / Ayana Sakanagi (坂凪 綾名 Sakanagi Ayana)
- Voiced by: Inori Minase[1]
- A rather quiet girl, she is allied with and extremely loyal to Ruler. Eventually though, she becomes disillusioned with Ruler's leadership and launches a scheme to overthrow her, resulting in Ruler's death and Swim Swim taking her place. She wears a white swimsuit with headphones as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability lets her transform herself and anything around her into liquid.
- Tama (たま) / Tama Inubouzaki (犬吠埼 珠 Inubōzaki Tama)
- Voiced by: Asuka Nishi[1]
- A slightly shy and nervous girl, allied with Ruler. She wears a dog costume, complete with large paw gloves as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to create a hole, up to 1m in diameter and 5m in depth, on any surface. While she is less competent than her other teammates in Ruler's team, she was happy just to be able to enter the team.
- Cranberry, the Forest Musician (森の音楽家クラムベリー Mori no Ongakuka Kuramuberī)
- Voiced by: Megumi Ogata[2]
- A recluse living within the ruins in the outskirts of N-City. Her outfit is decorated with wildflowers and leaves, and her appearance is that of an Elf. Her ability lets her manipulate sound waves. She has a strong desire to kill those stronger than her and appears to be collaborating with Fav.
- Nemurin (ねむりん) / Nemu Sanjou (三条 合歓 Sanjō Nemu)
- Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori[3]
- A 24-year old unemployed lazy girl, who still enjoys helping people. She wears pajamas and has cloud-like creatures coming out of her hair as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to enter other people's dreams, helping to fight off any nightmares, although the Magical Candies she earns in dreams don't count towards her total in the real world. She is the first magical girl to die after placing last in the first ranking.
- Ruler (ルーラ Rūra) / Sanae Mokuou (木王 早苗 Mokuō Sanae)
- Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa[1]
- An adult female office worker of indeterminate age. As a magical girl, she is a self-proclaimed Queen based in an abandoned temple in N-City along with her group of Magical Girl followers. She wears a royal Princess-like attire as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to use her scepter to force anyone in front of her to obey her commands. She is the second magical girl to die after being betrayed by Swim Swim and placing last in the second ranking.
- La Pucelle (ラ・ピュセル Ra Pyuseru) / Souta Kishibe (岸辺 颯太 Kishibe Sōta)
- Voiced by: Ayane Sakura[1]
- A close friend and ally of Snow White, revealed to be Koyuki's male childhood friend who also loves magical girls. Despite being a boy, his body becomes that of a girl's while transformed. As a magical girl, La Pucelle wears a Dragon Knight style attire, with draconic motifs in his armor as her outfit. Her ability allows her to change the length and size of her sword at will. La Pucelle is the third magical girl to die after she is killed by Cranberry.
- Magicaloid44 (マジカロイド44 Majikaroido Fōtīfō) / Makoto Andou (安藤 真琴 Andō Makoto)
- Voiced by: Satomi Arai[2]
- A robotic Magical Girl, who tends to care more about financial gain than helping others. Her ability allows her to obtain a random futuristic gadget from her backpack once per day, but even she cannot predict what it will be, and at the end of the day, it disappears. She is the fourth magical girl to die after being killed by Hardgore Alice, after attempting to kill Snow White.
- Yunael (ユナエル Yunaeru) / Yuna Amasato (天里 優奈 Amasato Yuna)
- Voiced by: Satsumi Matsuda[1]
- One of the two "Peaky Angels" twins. She and her sister are allied with Ruler. She wears an angelic-style dress, and has one wing for her outfit. Her ability allows her to shapeshift into any living being. She is the fifth magical girl to die after she is killed by Winterprison, her head being smashed into a wall.
- Weiss Winterprison (ヴェス・ウィンタープリズン Vesu Wintāpurizun) / Shizuku Ashuu (亜柊 雫 Ashū Shizuku)
- Voiced by: Yū Kobayashi[3]
- A powerful N-City Magical Girl, as well as Sister Nana's lover. She wears a thick winter coat as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability lets her create walls of any form, depending on the terrain. She is the sixth magical girl to die due to blood loss, after being stabbed by Yunaelle, and having her arm sliced off by Swim Swim.
- Calamity Mary (カラミティ・メアリ Karamiti Meari) / Naoko Yamamoto (山本 奈緒子 Yamamoto Naoko)
- Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue[2]
- A Magical Girl hired by the N-City's criminal underground. She wears a cowboy hat and has a wild-west style attire as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to magically enhance any weapon she uses. She is the seventh magical to die during a battle against Ripple, by one of Ripple's shurikens hitting her head.
- Top Speed (トップスピード Toppu Supīdo) / Tsubame Murota (室田 つばめ Murota Tsubame)
- Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama[1]
- A cheerful veteran Magical Girl who is paired up with Ripple. She wears a classical black witch outfit and a witch hat as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability lets her fly at breakneck speeds on her broomstick, Rabbit Swallow. She talks casually with a "ore" male self-referencing pronoun and is actually a pregnant 19 year old housewife. She is the eighth magical girl to die after being stabbed by Swim Swim in the back.
- Sister Nana (シスターナナ Shisutā Nana) / Nana Habutae (羽二重 奈々 Habutae Nana)
- Voiced by: Saori Hayami[3]
- A veteran N-City Magical Girl and Weiss Winterprison's lover. In real life, she is a sweet girl who lives with Shizuka. She has dedicated her career to protecting the city and bringing a message of peace. She wears a nun-like dress as her Magical Girl outfit. Her ability allows her to enhance a person's physical capabilities. She commits suicide by hanging, following Winterprison's death, becoming the ninth magical girl to die.
- Hardgore Alice (ハードゴア・アリス Hādogoa Arisu) / Ako Hatoda (鳩田 亜子 Hatoda Ako)
- Voiced by: Rina Hidaka[2]
- A young Magical Girl, she was recently chosen and became the 16th Magical Girl of N-City. She wears an Alice in Wonderland-style dress, draped in black as her Magical Girl Outfit. Her ability lets her regenerate any damage taken, allowing her to survive even beheading or dismemberment. She is the tenth magical girl to die, killed in her untransformed state by Swim Swim.
- Minael (ミナエル Minaeru) / Mina Amasato (天里 美奈 Amasato Mina)
- Voiced by: Risae Matsuda[1]
- One of the two "Peaky Angels" twins. She and her sister are allied with Ruler. She wears an angelic-style dress, and has one wing for her outfit. Her ability allows her to shapeshift into any non-living object. She is the eleventh magical girl to die after a failed ambush on Cranberry.
- Fav (ファヴ Favu)
- Voiced by: Kurumi Mamiya[2]
- The mascot character of the Magical Girl Raising Project social game and the familiar spirit who oversees the magical girl project. He orders the magical girls to fight each other claiming that the city's mana supply will be depleted causing the city's destruction if the number of magical girls is not reduced. His behavior comes across as suspicious as he hid the fact that those who are stripped of their magical girl powers also die in real life from everybody before they decide to become magical girls. He appears to have an unknown relationship with Cranberry must keep her end of the bargain on.

The first light novel volume was published on June 8, 2012 under Takarajimasha's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! Bunko imprint. Nine volumes have been published as of April 2016. Yen Press has licensed the series in English and will release the first novel in Summer 2017.[4]

Manga
A manga adaptation illustrated by Pochi Edoya was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine between September 26, 2014 and October 26, 2015. It was collected into two tankōbon volumes released between June 26, 2015 and March 26, 2016.[14][15] An adaptation of Magical Girl Raising Project: Restart, illustrated by Nori Senbei, began serialization in Comp Ace from June 2016. The first tankōbon volume was released on September 30, 2016.[16] A spin-off manga illustrated by Ryouta Yuzuki, Magical Girl Raising Project FTP, began release on the Kono Light Novel wa Sugoi! WEB service from August 29, 2016.

Anime
An anime television series adaptation by Lerche began airing in Japan from October 1, 2016[17][18] and is being simulcast by Crunchyroll.[19] The anime will be released across four Blu-ray & DVD volumes containing three episodes each.[20] The opening theme is "Sakebe" (叫べ Shout) by Manami Numakura, while the ending theme is "Dreamcatcher" by Nano.

| Top Speed is asked by Swim Swim to give her a lift to the mountains where her leader, Ruler, is having her group bury trash in order to try and earn more Magical Candies. Meanwhile, Snow White and La Pucelle, along with robot girl Magicalioid44, are contacted by Sister Nana and Weiss Winterprison, who reveal from a conversation log between Fav and Cranberry the Forest Musician that magical girls allegedly die when they lose their powers. As Magicaloid relays this to Mary, suggesting that they join forces, the Peaky Twins Minael and Yunael rope in dog girl Tama into helping increase their rankings with a promotional video. Eventually, all the girls learn from Fav about what will happen if they drop out, confirming that Nemurin had died as a result. As Snow White is torn over what the right thing to do is, an update is added allowing the girls to exchange Magical Candies with each other. Taking this to mean that magical girls can now steal candies from each other, Ruler tasks her followers with stealing candies from Snow White. | |||

| Yunael, Minael, and Tama lure La Pucelle away while Ruler has Swim Swim steal all of Snow White's Magical Candies. It is revealed that Swim Swim, having been influenced by Nemurin when she visited her dream, conspired with the Peaky Twins to betray Ruler and become their new leader. | Nana suggests to the others that they work together to find a way to stop the cruel system, but Ripple seems unwilling to co-operate. Nana then turns to Magicaloid, who had secretly been using her for monetary gain by supplying her with useless gadgets from the future which she wanted to use to make Weiss into a magical girl, offering her more money in exchange for negotiating with the admins. Nana and Winterprison are then called out by Cranberry, who reveals she is perfectly happy with the current nature of the game and launches an attack against them. Weiss fights using her earth magic, along with Nana's enhancement magic, but is overwhelmed by Cranberry's ability to manipulate soundwaves, which forces them to retreat. The next evening, as Nana and Winterprison meet the most recent magical girl, Hardgore Alice, who goes off in search of Snow White, La Pucelle is confronted by Cranberry. | |||

| La Pucelle battles against Cranberry, who seeks to kill opponents stronger than her. Although Fav announces this to be an accident, a slip of tongue causes Snow White to realize that La Pucelle was in fact murdered. Fav also announces a set of first-come first-served items, which girls pay for in exchange for taking years off of their lifespan, that are quickly sold out before Snow White can buy one for herself. Just then, Snow White is approached by Alice, who is instantly beheaded by Magicaloid under orders from Mary. Before she can kill Snow White, however, Magicaloid is herself killed by Alice, who somehow managed to survive her beheading. | |||

| Snow White, still traumatized over the previous night's events, finds herself with a Rabbit's Foot item that Alice had left behind. Despite using various methods to try and kill her, Mary finds that Alice has still somehow managed to survive following Fav's report. Later, Snow White once again comes across Alice, who reveals she wanted her to have the Rabbit's Foot, while Winterprison and Nana go to meet with Swim Swim's group. | |||

Urging Nana to escape without her, Winterprison kills Yunael as an act of revenge before she herself is killed by Swim Swim, sending both Nana and Minael into despair. The next evening, Mary, who sets out to try and kill Ripple and Top Speed, begins killing innocent civilians on the highway in order to prevent their escape. As Swim Swim sees this as an opportunity to kill any magical girls heading towards the scene, Cranberry becomes determined to fight the one who killed Winterprison. | |||

| Ripple goes to confront Mary head on, only to end up stepping on a landmine that will explode as soon as she steps off of it. After rescuing her from that situation, Top Speed responds to Ripple's desire to do what is right and goes back with her to confront Mary. Sneaking up from below, Ripple manages to kill Mary with a shuriken to the head, only for Swim Swim to suddenly appear and kill Top Speed as well. After Swim Swim escapes, Ripple is saddened to discover that Top Speed was pregnant with a child. Meanwhile, as Snow White and Alice are briefly confronted by Minael and Tama while trying to help out civilians, Nana hangs herself over the loss of Winterprison. Despite the number of magical girls in the city being reduced below the planned eight as a result of all the deaths, Fav announces that there are now plans to further reduce this number down to four. | |||

| Just as it seems they are finally getting along with each other, Snow White vent her frustrations at Alice following Pon's latest update on the new deaths and rule changes. On her way to school the next day, Alice is attacked in her civilian form by Swim Swim, who had learned of her secret identity after Minael disguised herself as Alice's stuffed rabbit. In her final moments, Alice calls out to Snow White, thanking her for giving her a reason to live and leaving her with the Lucky Rabbit's Foot before passing away. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Cranberry and Fav arranged the deathmatch as a selection exam to recruit magical girls for the World of Magic. Later, Swim Swim prepares to confront Cranberry, who injures Tama and kills Minael, who was lying in wait. | |||
