Marcell Siahaan (born Marcellius Kirana Hamonangan Siahaan; September 21, 1977) is an Indonesian singer of Batak-Dutch-Ambon-Javanese descents. Siahaan has garnered fame with collaboration single with Shanty "Hanya Memuji". Siahaan is a husband of Miss Singapore Universe' finalist Rima Melati Adams and former husband of Indonesian writer Dewi Lestari.

Career

Early life and career beginnings

Marcellius Kirana Hamonangan Siahaan was born on September 21, 1977, in Bandung, West Java, to Paian Siahaan S.H. and R.A. V. Indrasari. Since junior high school, Siahaan invited Robin Malau, friend of his brother forming the band, namely Puppen.

In addition, Siahaan had formed several a cappella groups, like Six of One, Falz No Boyz and Smooth at the SMU St. Aloysius in Bandung. In 1998, Siahaan decided to leave the group and continue his college at the Parahyangan Catholic University of Faculty Law. After that, Siahaan joined with a choir Glorify The Lord Ensemble, led by Daud P.M. Saba in 2001. According to him, the group choir has given the biggest contribution in his career as a singer.

2002–2004: "Hanya Memuji" and self-titled album

Before he signed a contract with Warner Music Indonesia, Siahaan had collaboration with Indonesian singer Shanty for "Hanya Memuji" and subsequently winning Best Dance/Rap/Disco/House Song award at the Anugerah Musik Indonesia in 2002. His debut self-titled studio album was released and produced the singles "Semusim", "Firasat", "Jangan Pernah Berubah" and "Waktu Kan Menjawab". All of it making him winning an award for Best of the Best Newcomer at the 2003 Anugerah Musik Indonesia. In 2002, Siahaan played the Trans TV' distribution film Andai Ia Tahu with Indonesian actress Rachel Maryam.

A year later, Siahaan launched his special edition Repackaged with the addition of two new songs, "Ku Tak Mendua" and "Mendendam" which written by Tengku Shafick (currently member for 3Composers). In 2005, Siahaan played his first soap-opera which was directed by Maruli Ara Kapan Kita Pacaran Lagi? and received an Vidia Award at the Indonesian Film Festival, and also played in his first television film Pacar Selebritis.

2006–2008: Denganmu and Hidup

His second studio album Denganmu was released in 2006, in which he worked together with many musicians for his all single, such as "Pelukkan (Untukku)" (with Andezz), "Jiwa Yang Hilang" (with Toma Pratama, and bassists of group Mocca), "Jelita" (with Andi Rianto, Irvan Chasmala, etc.) and "Sahabat Lama", which re-released single. The album had received positive response from viewers for production quality, however not too successful in sales compared with his debut studio album. In the same year, Siahaan also cooperated with duo group SOVA for single "The Bridge's Fallin". Siahaan won Best Artist (Male) at the 2006 Anugerah Planet Muzik.

Siahaan released his third studio album Hidup in 2008 and the album had begun working with an producer and musician Tohpati. The album considered as represent strength for its strong arrangements and in accordance with his image. Producing other single from album, such as "Candu Asmara" which popularized by Indonesian dangdut diva singer Cici Paramida and written by Guruh Soekarnoputra, "Berhenti Berharap", written by Indonesian guitarist session Andre Dinuth, "Pantaskah", written by Tohpati and an duet single "Bukan Lagu Cinta" with Indonesian Idol of season 1 finalist Karen Poole.

2009–2011: forming Konspirasi Band and And the Story Continuous...

Siahaan had forming for group band of genre post-grunge, Konspirasi Band, in 2009 with three member Edwin Syarif, Chandra "Che" Johan, and Denny Hidayat (replaced by Romy Sophiaan, due to his busy schedule). The group band had released first single "Melawan Rotasi".

In 2010, Siahaan returning played the film which directed by Monty Tiwa Laskar Pemimpi with Project Pop and Madame X.

After moving signed to E-Motion Entertainment Record in 2010, Siahaan released his fourth studio album And the Story Continuous... in April 2011 and produced two singles "Peri Cintaku" and "Mau Dibawa Kemana", which were recycled and popularized by Indonesian pop band Armada. Still the same year, Siahaan had a collaboration with Malaysian singer Dayang Nurfaizah for the single "Sayang", written by Malaysian musician Omar Khan. The single collaboration was only released in Malaysia and won the award for Best Collaboration (Artist) at the Anugerah Planet Muzik in 2011 in Singapore.

2013–2015: Platinum Playlist and Jadi Milikku

After two years without a release, Siahaan returning released his fifth studio album Platinum Playlist on April 24, 2013, and assisted by fast-food restaurant KFC.

In 2014, Siahaan has been collaboration to "Indonesia Maharddhika" with Iwan Hasan, Keenan Nasution, Indra Lesmana and English keyboardist & former member of Yes, Rick Wakeman for compilation album, same single title.[1] It was winning for Best Progressive Rock Production Work award at the 18th Annual Anugerah Musik Indonesia.

In 2015, Siahaan released his sixth studio album Jadi Milikku by Virgo Ramayana Record and produced the first single "Sempurnalah Cinta" with Andien, which was to become the original soundtrack for film Merry Riana: Mimpi Sejuta Dolar and also produced first Batak-language "Nasonang Do Hita Nadua".[2]

Personal life

Marcell married Indonesian singer-songwriter and writer Dewi "Dee" Lestari on September 12, 2003 and they have one child. After five years, they officially divorced on September 8, 2008.[3] Then, Siahaan returning married to twice times Miss Singapore Universe' finalist Rima Melati Adams, a British-national, on January 28, 2009, in Singapore[4] and they have two children.[5]

Marcell is a converte to Sufi Islam.[6] Currently, Siahaan was preparing for legal work as a lawyer.[7]
