The Maribor Generals are an American football team from Maribor, Slovenia, founded on March 21, 2008. The Generals are playing in the Slovenian Football League, where they became famous for their bitter rivalry with the Ljubljana Silverhawks. Since 2016, the team also competes in the Division 2 of the Austrian Football League.

History

The Maribor Generals were founded on March 21, 2008, when they had the first training together as a team and the coach Tibor Babič met for the first time face to face with the team, finding only a group of individuals who did not know about football, but had a desire to learn and become an organized team.[2]

The first months were difficult for the new team, not having a field where to train, usually renting small synthetic football fields and having new people in training, without equipment (shoulderpads, helmets and training equipment), but the team was lucky with the organizing of the coach who managed the team in difficult times.

In October 2009, the Generals, along with Ljubljana Silverhawks, the Kranj Alp Devils, and the Mozirje Gold Diggers, began to organize the first Slovenian Football League. The Generals played their first official match of the Slovenian Championship against the Kranj Alp Devils, which they defeated them by a score of 25–13 and scoring the first touchdown of a National Championship with a kickoff return.

In 2012, the Generals became one of the ruthless American Football teams in Slovenia, when they reached the Slovenian Bowl II, where they were defeated by the Sliverhawks, 23–10.[3] In the 2013 season, the difference in points made the Generals reached the Slovenian Bowl once again, but the Silverhawks defeated them again.[4]

In 2016, the Generals played in the Division 2 of the Austrian Football League, where the team finished in the first place without a single defeat after the regular part of the season,[5] but were defeated in the IX Iron Bowl game against the Styrian Bears, held in Graz.
