Mark Mayambela (born 9 September 1987 in Cape Town, Western Cape) is a South African football (soccer) player who currently plays for Ajax Cape Town in the Premier Soccer League.
Playing career
Mayambela began his professional career with Bloemfontein Celtic in 2007 after joining from the Old Mutual Academy. He joined Orlando Pirates in 2010.[1] He was linked with a move to Chippa United in January 2013, but the deal collapsed after he did not want to sign a three-year contract, preferring to join on a six-month deal instead.[2] Mayambela was mainly used as substitute in his 3 seasons at the club and left Pirates at the end of the 2012–13 season.[3] After leaving Pirates, he was linked with a move to an unnamed Turkish club and also trained with Moroka Swallows but failed to agree personal terms with them.[3][4]
He joined Mpumalanga Black Aces in August 2013 on a one-year deal[3] but left Aces in October 2013 by mutual consent after he and Mkhanyiseli Siwahla allegedly arrived at training under the influence of alcohol.[5] Both players were asked to undergo alcohol tests at a clinic, but they refused and were suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.[5] The players indicated that they did not want to attend the hearing and the club agreed with their request to be released from their contracts instead.[5] Mayambela later denied claims that he was drunk at training and stated that he left Aces because he was unhappy at the club.[6] He failed to play a single league game for Aces and made his only appearance for the club in a Telkom Knockout game against former team Orlando Pirates.[7]
Mayambela played with Djurgården during the 2014 season.[8]
