Markus U. Diethelm (born 22 October 1957) is a Swiss businessman. Currently, he is Group General Counsel of UBS. In September 2008, Mr Diethelm was initially appointed as a member of the Group Executive Board of UBS, and subsequently to UBS Group AG in November 2014[2] and was appointed to the Executive Board with effect to 1 January 2007.[2] He has been Executive Board member of UBS Business Solutions AG between 2015 and 2016.

Education and professional memberships

Mr. Diethelm graduated with a law degree (lic.iur.) from the University of Zurich and a Master's degree (Master of Science of Law) and PhD (JSD) from Stanford Law School.[3]

Markus Diethelm is admitted as a Rechtsanwalt (attorney-at-law) to bar chamber in Zurich and as attorney-at-law in New York City.[2]

Career

In 1983, Mr Diethelm started his career with the Zurich law firm Bär & Karrer.[3]

He worked at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City in 1988 as a foreign associate.[2] A year later, he practiced at New York's Shearman & Sterling, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.[3] In 1992, he joined a Los Angeles law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, focusing on corporate matters, securities transactions, litigation and regulatory investigations while operating out of the firm's Brussels and Paris offices. He stayed with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher until 1998.[2]

Swiss Re

On 1 April 1998, Mr Diethelm joined Swiss Re as Group Chief Legal Officer[4] and was appointed to the Executive Board with effect to 1 January 2007.[2]

Under his leadership, Swiss Re introduced a successful global model for the Group's legal and compliance organization.[4] Furthermore, Mr Diethelm played a key role in the company's World Trade Center litigation and in major corporate development transactions.[5]

UBS

Markus Diethelm became a member of the Group Executive Board and was appointed as Group General Counsel of UBS on 1 September 2008.[2] Following the restructuring process, he was appointed to the same position within the UBS Group AG in 2014.[2] He works closely with Colin Bell, the head of operational risk. [6] In 2009, Diethelm negotiated with the U.S Department of Justice Tax Division Attorney Kevin M. Downing in an investigation about tax fraud. The UBS paid $780 million and revealed several client names.[7]

Other mandates

Markus U. Diethelm is the Chairman of the Legal Committee of the Swiss American Chamber of Commerce.[8]

Mr Diethelm holds mandates as a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, the Swiss Advisory Council of the American Swiss Foundation, the Foundation Council of the UBS International Center of Economics in Society,[9] the Conseil de Fondation du Musée International de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge, and the Professional Ethics Commission of the Association of Swiss Corporate Lawyers.[2]
