The Chesterfield County Mathematics and Science High School at Clover Hill is a magnet school in Midlothian, Virginia. The school, which is on the campus of Clover Hill High School, opened in September 1994. The school is a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (NCSSSMST). It was known as the Renaissance Program early in its history.
Enrollment
The school opened with an initial enrollment of 100 students — 75 freshmen and 25 sophomores. In subsequent years, the incoming class numbered approximately 100 freshmen.
Any student in the Chesterfield County schools is eligible to apply. Applying students must submit two teacher recommendations: one from either their middle school mathematics or science teacher and one from another academic teacher. They must submit an application and take a special entrance test covering math, science, writing, and reading comprehension.
Courses
In line with what you would expect, it offers many classes in all subjects, not just mathematics and science. Each student in the program takes the same English, history, and science classes in freshman, sophomore, and junior year with students enrolled in different math courses based on their backgrounds. Because the program accepts a limited number of students, there is only one teacher for each of the four core classes. Thus the teachers work together in planning their curricula so that the themes of each class connect. In junior year, most students begin to replace standard English, history, science, and math classes with College Board AP classes. The most advanced math students will take AP BC Calculus in their sophomore or junior year and move on to higher levels of college math before they graduate.
Students have easy access to AP courses (including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, AB and BC calculus, European History, Literature, Music Theory, U.S. History, U.S. Government, Statistics, Latin), as well as John Tyler Dual Enrollment courses (Differential Equations, Advanced Mathematical Modeling, Linear Algebra, Microbiology, Human Heredity, College Composition, Field Biology), and some VCU courses (i.e. VCU Life Sciences 101). All of these courses are offered to the regular Clover Hill students.
