Mathew Murray (born June 4, 1993), credited professionally as M. H. Murray, is a Canadian web series creator, writer and director, known for his work on Teenagers (2014–present).

Early life

Murray was born in Toronto and raised in the Port Credit area of Mississauga, Ontario.[1] He began writing and directing short films in high school and subsequently attended film school at York University.[2] As a student, his short films screened at numerous film festivals.[3][4]

Career

Teenagers

In early 2014, Murray's first web series Teenagers gained significant popularity on YouTube and initially attracted media attention because its cast included several Degrassi stars including Chloe Rose and Raymond Ablack.[5][6] Murray began working on the concept in 2013 when he was 19 and in film school.[7] He co-produced the first season alongside Emmanuel Kabongo, who also stars.[6] The popular Canadian industry journal Playback published a piece on the series, writing: "the young creators of Teenagers had to have plenty of luck, pluck, talent and grit to get this far. And that portends a Hollywood ending."[8]

Since its release, the series has received positive reviews from blogs and indie publications,[9][10] and has screened at festivals around the world.[11][12][13] For the second season of the series, Orphan Black director T.J. Scott served as executive producer.[1] The first episode premiered on July 26, 2015, and has since been viewed over 3 million times on YouTube.[14] The second season was nominated for various awards, including a Canadian Screen Award[15] and four Indie Series Awards.[16] The first two seasons of the series were filmed in and around Toronto and Mississauga on a shoe-string budget.[17]

In 2016, for his work on Teenagers, Murray won the award for Best Screenplay at the Vancouver Web Series Festival.[18]

Influences

Though Teenagers has frequently drawn comparisons to the Degrassi franchise and Skins,[19][20] Murray has stated that he was influenced by John Hughes and the 1995 Larry Clark film Kids.[21]
