Medici.tv

Medici.tv is an online platform for streaming classical music videos created in 2008 by Hervé Boissière.[1] The medici.tv catalog provides approximately 1600 films available by subscription, as well as hundreds of events which are broadcast live for free each year, available for 90 days.[2][3]

History

Founding

After filming and broadcast the Verbier Festival in 2007, the medici.tv video platform was officially launched on 1 May 2008 with 200 programs available online.[4] This launch is accompanied by several live events – the concert of the New York Philharmonic, the classical music festival in Aspen and the Opera Festival in Aix-en-Provence – before the broadcast of the Verbier Festival, 2008.

Expansion

In 2013, the site recorded 1.5 million unique visitors.[5] At Verbier Festival, which was broadcast live during the same year, the platform boasted 750,000 connections from 177 countries.[6]

Near the end of 2014 medici.tv broadcast four classical concerts from New York's Carnegie Hall. This is the first time the Carnegie Hall concerts were filmed and broadcast on the internet live.[7][8]

From 15 June to 3 July 2015, medici.tv broadcast the entire XV International Tchaikovsky Competition, a contest featuring the most prestigious of classical musicians, live. Of the four disciplines of the competition (piano, violin, cello and vocals), 120 candidates were followed through the different stages of the competition in Moscow and St. Petersburg.[9]

Purposes

With the booming apparition of digital media contents, and digital industries medici.tv’s main goal is to give easier access to classical music, legally from amateurs to experts. medici.tv is also a resource for the education sector as it streams to university libraries, colleges and conservatoires.[10]
