Miriam Jane Alice "Mims" Davies[1] (born 4 June 1975) is a British Conservative Party politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Eastleigh on 7 May 2015.[2]

Career

Davies was educated at the Royal Russell School and studied politics at Swansea University[3] and was the first in her family to enter higher education.[4] She worked primarily as a local radio presenter, reporter and producer.[3] She later worked as a road safety communications officer with the Automobile Association and the police force.[4] Davies served a councillor on Mid Sussex District Council for the Haywards Heath Lucastes ward from 2011 to 2015.

At the 2015 general election on 7 May, Davies was elected as MP for Eastleigh, defeating Liberal Democrat incumbent Mike Thornton by over 9,000 votes.

Political Positions

Davies holds a eurosceptic viewpoint within the Conservative Party. She has been quoted as saying:

I want an EU referendum... Britain and NOT Brussels, should control immigration, justice and human rights. We need to... negotiate a cut to EU immigration and make welfare reform an absolute requirement in renegotiation... But if we do not get the reforms we need and it's for the best for Britain.[sic] I would vote to go.

Personal life

Davies has two children. She separated from Mark Davies in November 2015. She is a keen runner and has completed several long distance races, including marathons.[3] Both Mims and Mark Davies are shareholders in NewRiver Retail plc, a company of which Mark is also finance director.[6] The company owns 29 shopping centres and over 200 pubs along with a range of other assets.[7][8]
