MobiCom Corporation (Mongolian: Мобиком Корпораци) is the largest mobile phone operator in Mongolia.
It was established as a joint Mongolian-Japanese venture on 18 March 1996, to be the first Mongolian cell phone service. It was founded by Newcom Group, Sumitomo, and KDDI. Mongolia's Newcom. In 2016 March, MobiCom was consolidated in KDDI Corporation Group and KDDI took majority share.
As of June, 2015, Mobicom holds over 33 percent of the mobile service market,[1] with network coverage of 95 percent across the country, the widest range of coverage in Mongolia. It delivers its services through 64 branch units, 2,200 dealers and over 10,000 mobile sales points.
Aside from cellular communications, Mobicom also has services including international communications, Internet and satellite communications and wireless local loop or WLL.[2] Its prepaid services are exclusively sold through Newtel LLC.
Mobicom introduced 3.5G networking in 2009, and provides HSPA.
Mobicome network support phones with UMTS 2100, HSDPA 2100, HSUPA 2100 or HSPA 2100 bands.[3]
ISO certificate
MobiCom became ISO certified for Quality Management System and Information Security Management in 2011, and was re-certified for another three years in 2014.[4] The company also obtained its ISO 27001:2005 for Information Security Management System Standard in 2012. Currently, no other Mongolian mobile service provider companies have received the ISO certificate.
Corporate Social Responsibility
MobiCom Corporation has been known for its significant projects through its Corporate Social Responsibility programs. Since its establishment the mobile service operator company has invested 3.6 billion tugriks (USD 2 million) in a period of 18 years.
Lunch program
In 2008, the company organized the Lunch program at 12 primary schools in Ulaanbaatar city among 3,334 students. As a result, the students showed a better attendance rate with 0% tardiness as well a significant drop in sickness and a more active participation in academic work. Based on this achievement, the government and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science implemented the Lunch project across the country for all primary and middle school students.
Mobi Drive program
This project aimed at supporting the education sector, starting in 2010 at 19 schools in Bayanzurkh district of Ulaanbaatar city, 5 schools in Gobi-Altai and Dornogobi provinces each, and one school in Tsogttsetsii, Umnugobi province. MobiCom Corporation set up a workshop room with a digital management and training program as well as portal website while supplying highly advanced desktop and laptop computers and projector along with high-speed internet connections.
Role Model IT school
MobiCom Corporation established an IT model center at Ulaanbaatar city's school number 24. Currently, the school recruits new members from 9-11th grader students through a competitive qualifications process and the members enjoy a wide of technology-related lectures and hands-on practice at the center fully equipped with advanced technological devices that allow the students to use the internet, e-library, and remote lectures.
Child Helpline 108
This project was initiated by World Vision Mongolia and supported by the government-implementation agency, the National Authority for Children of Mongolia. Launched on June 1, 2014, the project now works 24/7 with three shifts, providing emergency assistance and counseling to children, youth, teachers and parents. Children can call the Child Helpline 108 from any phone anywhere in the country free of charge. MobiCom works to support the project's technical and software.
"UB construction" app
in 2014 MobiCom Corporation worked in collaboration with the Ulaanbaatar city municipality to develop an app that defines the location, direction and distance to construction buildings currently in process. The app was developed with the enriched artificial imagery technology, which allows the users to check the information about the construction permit for building sites currently in process.
Water, sanitation and hygiene project
In December 2014, MobiCom Corporation launched a project to provide a proper and hygiene environment for school children in remote provinces. The project was implemented in collaboration with World Vision Mongolia and the local authorities of Gobi-Altai province and Khovd province's 6 counties, providing a safe, project sanitary restroom with running hot and cold water. The project directly benefitted 3800 children in school and dormitories.
