Moneague College
The Gloria-Johnson Multipurpose Building
Moneague College is a multidisciplinary institution located in Moneague, Saint Ann, Jamaica on the main road between Kingston and Ocho Rios. The college is partly situated in the former colonial-era Moneague Hotel.
History
The Moneague Hotel was built in 1891. During World War II it was used as a soldier's camp. In 1956, Dr Aubrey Phillips founded Moneague College on the site of the former hotel. The college has expanded today. The original hotel building that was once used for student accommodation and administrative offices has been burnt down and is awaiting reconstruction.
Moneague College has expanded beyond a teacher training institution to a multi-disciplinary college, offering certificates, associate degrees and degrees in many areas, such as Tourism and Hospitality Management, Business Studies, Management Information Systems, Environmental Studies Psychology and more. The Pre- University Arts and Science and Continuing Education programmes also make the Moneague College unique in its offerings.
The tourism programme at Moneague College is one of the most recognised in the parish of St. Ann. Courses range from basic to advanced in food theory, preparation and service, front office operations, events management etc. At the end of two years, students receive an associate degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management. The tourism course at the college is accredited by the University Council of Jamaica. Moneague also networks with North American colleges and universities through which tourism students can complete their bachelor's degree, these include Southern New Hampshire University and Monroe College, a for-profit institution in New York.
The current principal for the institution is Howard R. Issacs.
Footstep 11
In July 2007, Moneague College hosted the Footstep 11 International Youth Conference. The environmental event was organised by Global Footsteps and the UK based educational charity The Rendezvous Society.
