Moovit is a public transit app and mapping service developed by Israeli software company Moovit Inc.. The app features trip planning, live arrival and departure times, up-to-date line schedules, local station maps, service alerts, and advisories that may affect one's current trip. It currently supports mobile Android,[1] iOS,[2] Windows devices,[3] and has a web version, Moovit on Web. Moovit is the most used transit app[4] in the world with over 45 million users worldwide, supporting +1,200 cities, in 67 countries, and 44 languages.

Overview

Moovit offers real-time public transit information and GPS navigation across transit modes, including buses, ferries, rapid transit (metro/subways/undergrounds, etc.), trains, trams, and trolleybuses. Users can access a live map, and view nearby stops and stations based on their current GPS location, as well as plan trips across transportation modes based on real-time data.[5] The application differs from traditional public transit applications as it is community-driven and integrates official public transit data from transit operators with real-time data collected from users via crowdsourcing.[6] In March 2014, Moovit became the first provider to create transit data for areas in which no data is officially available (or where local transit agencies do not offer it to app developers) by creating a "community editor" and allowing volunteer editors to generate schedule and map data[7] to be loaded into the Moovit app.

By riding with the 'Live Directions' feature active, users can passively and anonymously transmit their speed and location data to Moovit. Moovit then integrates this crowdsourced data with public transit schedules to improve trip plan results based on current conditions, and share this data with the user community.[8] In addition to passively sharing data, users can actively send reports including reasons for delays, overcrowding, satisfaction with their bus driver, and wifi availability.[9]

Moovit is available in more than +1,200 cities across 67 countries around the world including Barcelona, Bogota, Cape Town, Istanbul, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Mexico D.F., New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, São Paulo, Santiago de Chile, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Toronto.[10] The app is free for mobile Android, iOS, and Windows devices.[11]

Moovit uses OpenStreetMap maps, a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world based on the Open Database License.

Awards

Moovit has received several awards including:

Moovit was selected by the City Hall of Rio as the official transit app of the Rio 2016 Olympics[18] and collaborated with the UEFA EURO 2016 Fan Guide App to help football fans get around during the EURO 2016 football competition.[19]
