Muhterem Aras (Born January 2, 1966 in Elmaağaç in Bingöl, Turkey) is a German politician (Alliance '90/The Greens). She is since May 2011, a Member of the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg for the constituency Stuttgart I and since May 2016 Landtag President.

Education and profession

Aras was born in Turkey in the eastern Anatolian village Elmaağaç the daughter of Alevi Kurds and came in 1978 with her parents and siblings to Filderstadt.[1] After high school and high school in Stuttgart, she then studied economics at the University of Hohenheim.[1] In 1999 she founded an accounting firm with twelve employees in Stuttgart.[1]

Political activity

Her political career began in 1992 with the entrance of the Green Party. In 1999, as a first mandate, she took over after the local elections the local council of Stuttgart.[1] In 2007-2011, there, she was parliamentary leader of her party.

In the 2011 Baden-Württemberg state election, she won the Erstmandat in constituency Stuttgart I with 42.5% of the votes cast [2] and thus was cast Queen of the Greens in Baden-Württemberg. In 2011, Aras was the first Muslim woman in the Baden-Württemberg Landtag.[2] She was a member of the Committees on Finance and Economic Affairs and of Culture, Youth and Sports and fiscal policy of the Green Party Group.

Since 2014 Aras is county chairman of the Stuttgart District Association of Alliance '90 / The Greens.[3] In 2016 she ran again in Parliament constituency Stuttgart I, and won the mandate with 42.4 percent, again the nation's best result for her party.[4]

On May 11, 2016, Aras was elected with the votes of 96 MPs to the new Baden-Württemberg Landtag president, and was in Germany, the first member of the Greens, the first Muslim woman and was the first woman in Baden-Württemberg.[1]

Family

Muhterem Aras is married since 1986 and has a son and a daughter. She's Alevism beliefs,[5] and lives in Stuttgart.[1]
